I have to say, after hearing your Toeto cover I've been listening to so much off vocaloid stuff on YouTube.

I started at Hatsune Miku and my favourite was Hirari, Hirari.
And I absolutely love Dark Woods Circus and Toeto, they've got such awesome melodies.

I just watched that first video, 'Circle You...'. If that is vocaloid stuff, it's not for me. That is just morbid and sick. I don't think I will try the other videos in the list.

I am so freaking jealous that you saw her live ;-;
I hope she decides to come to the UK one day. I'd be the first to buy a ticket.

Aanyway, while Jack suggested some VERY good ones, but I feel he also left out some essentials

<Miku fanboy mode>
Miku - Melt
Miku - Miku Miku ni ****e ageru
Miku - Kocchi Muite baby
Len - Butterfly on your right shoulder
Luka - Toeto

That + Jack post, pretty much covers all of my favourite vocaloid songs.

Oh, and if anyone is interested, I have uploaded 2 ocarina vocaloid songs.
I am also planning to make a Miku Miku ni ****e ageru video. I just can't be bothered to record lately.

@Roger - That was not a good way to introduce you to Vocaloid :( Vocaloid is a music software that simulates singing, created by Yamaha and there are many songs that were written specifically for Vocaloid. Some of it can be dark (and morbid) like many genres out there, but some of it is also light hearted and fun. Check these out for the lighter/happy side...the side I prefer, lol:

Ievan Polkka
Toeto
Amazingly Cute song about reading Kanji xD (Anyone know the title?)

Look on the bright side.
I've actually only just recently learned what vocaloid was, after seeing some people talking about a Miku concert on tinychat. I didn't know who Miku was so I decided to check it out. I like it so far! But I don't know enough songs to pick favourites yet.

Out of the ones I've heard though, ones that stick out so far are Melt (Miku), World is Mine (Miku), Innocence (Miku), Promise (Miku & Rin), and Cantarella (Rin & Len)

Thanks for clearing that up David. I watched your first two videos. I guess the language is Japanese? It is pretty cool, but I'd rather listen to you, Cris, Ubi, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I wonder if they are going to do this in the English language also? Pretty neat, really.

I watched "Circle You, Circle You" too. Different reaction to Roger - the storyline was pretty much my reality as a kid (having an endless series of plastic surgery operations motivated by some future payoff that may as well have been immortality for all its immediate relevance). So I didn't find it pointlessly dark, in fact I think I would have found it rather reassuring if I could have seen it at 7.

But the music was rather trivial and boring.

I was just looking on here again, and I need to apologize to Elven Spellmaker. I didn't see that those videos he suggested were some of his favorites until just now. I made a comment that was very opinionated against that one video I watched, and I don't think it was proper to do so. I wouldn't have been so direct had I noticed that it was one of his favorites. I'm going back to change that post and want to ask you to forgive my blunt comment. No, I didn't get a warning or pm from Elven about this, but I don't think I wasn't being very tactful.

Oh, man, you are so lucky to have seen Miku in concert! I'd love to go to a vocaloid concert one day. I'm not in a financial position to be traveling cross-country to a big city near a coast to do so though. Not yet anyway. One day though, hopefully. I bet it was a thrilling experience. :jumpy:

And how cool was it to be surrounded by vocaloid fans? XD I only know a few vocaloid fans personally, and they're all my good friends (who also happen to be otakus like me). Haha! Would be cool if vocaloid went "mainstream," but at the same time, I kinda like it the way things are right now. Feels like I'm in an exclusive club or something. :P

One thing's for sure though, as long as vocaloid is Japanese only, it will never reach a mainstream audience here in the U.S. (or the western world, period). I do hear, however, that Yamaha (or somebody, I forget exactly who) is in the process of creating English vocaloid software. I would personally love to mess around with it when that day comes when there are English vocaloids, 'cause I've actually written a few songs myself, but since I don't play any instruments well enough (and couldn't sing to save my life), they're sort of stuck on paper. It would be neat to hear my songs played/sung via vocaloid. :D

I think it's cool that we've got the same taste in vocaloid songs, David. ^_^

There are a couple of English Vocaloid voices already but they aren't well known. What is cool is when someone uses a Japanese one and tries to make them speak English.

I love you for showing me this. The creepy carnival one especially (Music Box House). The lines, "Welcome to my music house; you will never want to leave. Music box singing, and dolls are dancing, and joyous screams of the dead ring," stuck out to me. I was like, "...awesome." XD

But oh, man... Tarm Ruins (the last one you posted) gave me a nostalgia attack. I LOVE the "Oracle of " games, especially Oracle of Ages, which is my favorite 2D Zelda game, second only to A Link to the Past, and my fourth favorite Zelda game of all time.

Though, if I recall, Tarm Ruins was a Seasons location. Played Seasons as well, but still prefer Ages over it, as I'm more of a puzzles oriented guy, rather than a combat oriented, which is what Seasons focused on.

In any case, it's pretty cool how people can "trick" the program into singing in English. :P

Do the voices have to be high and squeaky?

Could you do a Vocaloid rendition of this, for example?

Well there are very few male Vocaloids out there. If there were more it might be possible.

However I think the effect they are going for is slightly high and squeaky in most cases.

Plus Luka's voice is often played as a deeper woman's voice.

There is a remake of Magnet which has two male Vocaloids in it. Kaito and Gakupo: Magnet (Kaito and Gakupo Version)

Apparently this is just two female voices (which the author of the original file managed to get their voices low enough to pass as males). It switches between the two throughout the song: Magnet Hitori and Che:Sakurai Version)

Then there is the 12 people rendition of magnet, which contains some of the few male vocaloids: Magnet (12 voices, 14 layers)

Keen eyes will notice two Len and two Kaito and someone tried to explain it in a comment: The reason there are two Kaito's is that the song needs the push for the bass.

Kaito sings bass and both the Kaito's that are singing are in different octaves, but in the same pitch. It's the same with the Len's, except, Len is singing as a Mezzo soprano to bride the gap between the soprano's and alto's and make it flow more evenly.

Hope that helps~

So yes Jack, it's very possible to make them not sound squeaky and high pitched, it's just there isn't many people who use the female voices as male ones or who have the few male Vocaloids out there.

The full song can only played on a multi-chambered ocarina.

Specifically a double G ocarina (Preferably alto, but it still sounds okay on soprano).
I'm pretty sure a triple C could cover it though.

If you were to transpose the chorus down an octave, so you are playing it in the same octave as the verses, then you would be able to play it on a single G.
And you can transpose it to a C if you like, but then you wouldn't be in the original key...

XD Don't tell me I knew who Hatsune Miku was back when she came out in 2007?

Anyways Dude, that COncert just totally rocked. I nearly fainted when I saw Rin Sing MELTDOWN XD

Anyways, my favourite songs I would have to say are:
Meltdown- Rin Kagamine
Rolling Girl- Miku
Romeo and Cinderella- Miku
World's End Dancehall- Luka and Miku
The Story of Evil ("Daughter of Evil" "Servant of Evil" "Regret Message" and "Daughter of White")- Rin and Len Kagamine and Haku (NOTE: You MUST watch the song series in THAT order if you have never seen it, the songs all make up a story)
Soundless Voice- Len
Proof of Life- Rin
Dancing Samurai- Gakupo
Paranoid Doll- Gakupo
Imitation Black- Vana'N ICE (Kaito, Len, and Gakupo)
Loveless_XXX -Vana'N ICE
Iroha Uta- Rin
The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku- Miku (those who never heard of this song, it's about Miku dying and she is trying to tell her owner her very last good bye)
Melt- Miku

XD I can just go on
