So, my first ocarina is planned to arrive on Thursday (thanks to you guys ;D) and I was wondering what I should need to know before I start learning. Also, it would be helpful if you could post some songs that are fairly simple, yet fun. Thanks ![]() I'm getting a Focalink 12 hole Alto C Edited by esymptote, Mar 17 2010, 03:59 AM.

tip #1 ALWAYS wear the neckstrap, if you don't have one i suggest you to play while you are sited. tip# 2 don't overblow blow, blow gently to get the note or you'll get an awful squeak tip #3 download AP tuner http://www.aptuner.com/cgi-bin/aptuner/apmain.html so you know the exact breath pressure each note needs tip #4 Post any of your doubts here and most of us will be glad to answer Sorry i can't post any music for you cuz i don't know what kind of oc you have and i'm feeling too lazy too look for the images |

Thanks for the reply. ^^ Do I need a special neckstrap for an ocarina, or could I just grab any old strap? How would I go about attaching it? |

if there's a hole (not the one's for making the notes!) in the ocarina you can put any kind of strap in there if there isn't then you'll have to be extra careful you don't want to break you oc |

I use an orange ribbon as a neckstrap! Everyone needs some nice ribbons.I would check out DocJazz4's 'OcTalk' videos on Youtube. He's got two good ones in particular that I like showing people, 'Articulation' and 'Reaching Those High Notes'. They're not very long, and I think they would make a massive, immediate difference to your playing. I would probably just say the same things as are in the videos, and it helps massively to actually see someone do it. People can go for months on TON without knowing exactly what the 'acute bend' should look like! |

I usually recommend beginners start off with songs they already know, so it's much quicker to pick up the fingering that way. Plus it's a lot more interesting because you're learning a beloved song. Congrats on your ocarina! |
