Hey folks, the topic title really says it all. Is anyone else out there a smoker? How does it affect your playing/breath control? I realize that I am yet a beginner and it is natural to have to work at breath control, but I'm beginning to wonder if my usual pack or so a day is holding me back. Anyone in a similar situation? Are there any smokers out there who play the oc just fine anyway? |

I'm not a smoker but i was just about to add a thread similar to this one, as my brother smokes and wants to get one. Also, how does the ocarina handle that smell? Does it wash off well from ceramic and plastic? Edited by DustyLad, Mar 15 2010, 11:17 PM.

I have come across ocarinas that were used as ash trays and incense burners. It is sad, but can be fixed using Febreze (to trap particles) and left to dry. A good washing with soap and water should follow. Dry thoroughly again. I would not recommend such treatment for a good ocarina, but it can restore one to working order again with some work. |

I'm not quite at a pack a day, maybe a 3/4 a pack a day. I know that it affects my endurance in physical sports, but I can't say that it stops me from playing the ocarina. I recently got my first STL ocarina after playing a Focalink AC 12 Hole for a while, and I was surprised that it required so much more breath than the Focalink. I am getting used to it slowly, but I think I would have that same learning curve with a new ocarina regardless of whether I smoke or not. I can't say that I wouldn't be able to hold a note longer if I didn't smoke, I'm sure I could, but the difference is not nearly as much as a non-smoker might think it would be. I don't have any problems with odor. I certainly don't smoke and play at the same time, nor would I ever think of blowing smoke through the ocarina. I don't smoke in the house or indoors at all anyway. I just gave my ocarina to my 15 year old daughter and asked her if she could smell anything on it. After sniffing it a minute she said: "Smells like Chapstick." I specifically asked if she could smell ciggarette smoke in it. She sniffed at the hole for a minute and said, "Well... maybe a little, but if you hadn't mentioned it I wouldn't have noticed." In case you are wondering, I do not smoke around her, in the house, or in the car unless I am alone, and then only in my truck. So I certainly don't have to clean it any more often that anyone else, or purify it with Febreeze as if it were used as an ashtray. (That's just wrong! How could someone do that?) A few days ago I recorded the Ave Maria, which is known for requiring long held notes and a lot of breath. I felt it in a couple of places, but I think anyone would. I might not be all that good, but it's not because of smoking. Judge for yourself whether a smoker can play the ocarina. Ave Maria |

Although smoking and wind instruments do not make a good couple, you will always find some here and there xD |

I'm asthmatic, which is like being a smoker except it's all the bad parts, and worse. I find some ocarinas a bit of a pain to play... My STL and my massive Dunster, in particular. I find it a bit harder to play them for as long as some of my other ocarinas. I figure that if you have asthma or smoke, ocarinas that aren't very efficient, like STLs or Schwarz, will probably be a poor choice for you. I think that the ocarina would increase your lung capacity, but I still don't think that a smoker or asthmatic would be able to play for as long without stopping for air as someone who was neither. |

Hmm, I would say that over a period of time (as you improve on the ocarina), you'll definitely notice the smoking making a difference. Whether it's not being able to hold a note as long, or breathe as deeply as non smokers, or perhaps not being able to complete a phrase, smoke still damages the lungs to some degree. But, if you're a hobbyist and just playing the ocarina for fun, don't worry too much about it. |
