Trolling' around on ebay - help me find an ocarina?

Alrighty, I'm ready to get my new better Ocarina (I currently have a very shrill, badly tuned clay pendant)! Problem is, I've over-analyzed watching just about every review and sound sample out there, and now can't pick one! So, it would be cool if people could help play matchmaker for me :D

Here's an idea of what I'm looking for:

I like a low, sweet sound

Would prefer sweet-potato style

Plastic is fine. I have a 7 year old and a ton of pets, so plastic might even be preferable. I also like the price

Speaking of price -- keeping it below $50 would be good. I plan on this just being something I learn on, and once I'm ready I'll be more willing to break the bank on one. ;)

I don't particularly care about the hole layout/style, but more than 6 holes is good (I already know I don't want the songbird fairy sweet potato for example)

A key that will allow me to play the most songs (from what I read -- a key of C is best for that?)

So far I've been kinda switching between the noble and the solist AC's, sort of leaning toward the noble... it seems to have a more 'sweet' tone to me, while the solist seems to have more of a breathy sound (again, to me at least... could be totally wrong here)... thoughts? Other suggestions?

Thanks in advance :)

Lol, don't waste your time trollin' around eBay.
Check out my Buyer's guide
http://theocarinanetwork.com/topic/6606758/

I have some good quality plastic options listed there too.
Noble and Zin are good for plastic Alto C.

Haha... kissing, your guides and reviews are part of my problem! So much info to absorb and I just end up wanting all of them!

I am actually totally in love with the way the plastic zin bass sounds... but if I was going to spend the price of that one, I'd get a nice clay alto or something, instead. I've not been able to find sound samples of the zin alto though... and the colors make my eyes want to bleed >.<

I keep hovering over the plastic AC Noble... am I correct in that it has a less airy sound than the alto C solist? That's probably the one I'll end up with if so.

Then once that's mastered, an in-line one, so I can learn that fingering... because my eventual goal (for now!) is to get good enough for one of these: http://hindocarina.com/videos/jens_song.shtml

... and I'll go even more off-topic for a moment: on hind, they call that one a 'double ocarina' ... but it actually sounds like two ocarinas played at once, while every other one I've read as a 'double ocarina' just sounds like a single ocarina with a huge range? Is there a reason for that?

Thanks again! :)

This is something I can answer for you! What you have seen are double chambered ocarinas called Harmony ocarinas. The range is not extended in a second chamber, but they are instead harmonized with each other. Linkie

Hind sells both types, but he calls a regular double 'Extended range Double Sweet Potato' to avoid the confusion. There have been both sweet potato and in-line harmony ocarinas offered on his website at one time or another.

Oh yeah! Now I remember. THose things were pretty rad. . . .and an arm and a leg in expense. @_@ One day I shall find a genie bottle and wish for a hind double, an invincble ocarina tripe bass and another wish for all OTHER things that are less important than an oc. 8D ;)

Thanks, moonsyne! That answers that question nicely. Is hind the only place that sells the harmony doubles? A quick ebay search doesn't show anything at all... not even the hind ones.

Speaking of ebay -- just placed a bid on a noble! But, Pen_Anima --- plz to be sending all of your ocarinas to me post haste tnx bai! ;)

(I am honestly interested in everything but your Zelda Ocarina. Trying to figure out a way of justifying spending more than $100 on ocarinas at once... >.>)

Good for you! As long as you don't bid on the black noble double, *lol* I was kinda hoping I could get that one ;)

Speaking of ebay and stuff, though, I'm a newbie to all of that. Is it difficult to get a paypal account? Do you have to put money in it through credit card or something? Cause I don't have that yet. In Holland I think we mostly pay for stuff on internet through internet banking, which I do know how to do ;)

In any case, good luck and I hope you get that oc you want!

Nah, I put it on a standard plastic AC... not ready for double just yet, and I think I'm going for the 'harmonizing' type of double once I am ready :D

Paypal is really easy. You can either set up a basic account and just pay for stuff through it with a normal credit card, or 'verify' your account (using your bank account) and transfer funds into it from said bank and pay that way. Good luck getting your double! :)

Paypal is fairly easy and safe to go about. Its very safe .. . I consider it a shoppers safe medium to buy things on the internet. Instead of giving random merchants MY personal card number and such, I keep it safe with paypal and paypal goes and transfers the money safely for me without sharing my information with the merchant. Same goes for me as a merchant *at the current moment*

The most I know is to WHERE i'm sending the items to, the name you choose to appear on your paypal, and your email for confirmation and to see if we have all our details in order. :) All you have to do is get a paypal account and have your bank connect. You don't have to put any money or transfer into or out of paypal. For yourself and simply keep all your money in your initial bank. Paypal is just the safe method of buying. ^_^ A majority, if not all, people use Paypal on ebay and many of us here on TON are comfortable with the security on trading with.

Yay, thanks for the info!

The safety stuff is reassuring. I remember how people would question its safety when paypal was still new, and that scared me off.
Also, this means I won't have to bother anyone else with my digital shopping needs ;) I would hate having to explain to people that I'm convinced getting this ocarina is a good investment, *lol*. They would just look at me funny.

So far it's mainly Hind, Woodsound, and Songbird who offer harmony doubles (also called duplets). Only Hind has Transverse (Sweet Potato) Duplets though. Songbird hasn't released their duplet for sale yet, even I can't get one of them yet and I bought an unreleased DT model with no problem.

My Hind Inline Duplet is on the way though, they're not too bad priced at $130. He makes them in batches so if you decide on one, now is a good time as itl be "fresh".

Is hind the only place that sells the harmony doubles?
I know that John Langley does pendants and Terry Riley does what he calls Vessel Flutes.

Both are worth the time to look and listen too; just for fun!
Each website has video samples found somewhere about them.

Also, these wooden harmony doubles are worth looking at:

Just letting y'all know I got the noble and it was shipped today! Of course, it hasn't even gotten here and I'm already itching to get a hind harmony.

Thanks for the help and info! Maybe by the time it gets here, I'll have my camera working (I'm sure it actually works -- just having trouble 'cause I've never tried a webcam in linux before) so I can post my awful first attempts at playing ;)
