Does anyone know if anyone makes an AE (alto E) ocarina? If so, what are the prices and who makes them? :playoc:

I have never heard of an Alto E, but there is an Alto F. Would that be close enough? According to STL the range is from D5 to Bb6 including sharps and flats.

I've been looking for an Alto E myself and to date I haven't found a single one.

I'm more interested in a Key of C, Alto E though. Which is an ocarina who's tonic is E, but follows the C major scale ( E F G A B C D E ).

You'll mostly find C D F G Bb keyed ocarinas.

Unfortunately, it would be difficult to play songs in E on an F ocarina.
The key of F has 1 flat, whereas the key of E has 4 sharps. One of the reasons for getting ocarinas in different keys is that it helps you play certain keys more easily.

1 flat vs 4 sharps. Not much help there :dead: Ugh I dislike keys like E.

You might be able to get one specially made by focalink or songbird. It'd probably cost quite a bit though, the AF from focalink (straw fired version from the 7 piece set) costs $200 USD. So given the increased size, it'd probably cost about $220 if it were a regular one, not commissioned. With the extra price for the specially made key, I'd say you'd be looking somewhere around $250. (for a straw fired version, which are quite a bit more expensive)

I think that it'll be hard to find without going to a maker like MapAram for a custom. Maybe keep an eye on Dunster's auctions? Her ocarinas come in quite obscure keys, so I'd keep an eye out. The same goes for Etsy.com - you kind some oddly tuned ocarinas there.

In looking at expensive to receive commissioned models, don't forget that you can also talk to Mr. Hind about custom models. I don't think a different tonic would be too out there for him to do. The price point might be a tad bit high though... However, getting a rare key and a Hind ocarina in one fell swoop... totally worth it.

Yeah I had thought about asking Mr. Hind. There is a 3-month waiting list (which I am already on, LOL) for custom orders though. Maybe I'll ask about a custom E-Tonic Tenor C Inline, but I'll wait till I receive my duplet from him first. I'd really hate to be a bother. Though I think he's thrilled with me right now lol, having spent $805 at his shop!

I think that E Tonic C would be interesting to play. Any reason you're looking for that specific combination?

It fits my vocal range perfectly, I can't sing worth a damn, but I want an oc with "my voice". Though, my voice isn't as low as a Tenor, it would be Alto I think, but I don't really know.

Sounds like a nice way to get an ocarina with your own personal touch added to it. Stuff like that is why I think it's so cool that Mr. Hind does his commission work. Personalized instruments are always great in my mind, the connection between instrument and musician just becomes that much stronger... Of course there I go waxing all new-agey, but seriously, there are times where I feel like my guitars/ocarinas are less instruments and more extensions of my own being.

And there I go off topic.

Anyway, to sum it up, sounds like a great way to personalize an ocarina and really make it your own.

Yeah, it would be kinda tricky, but I'm sure I "could" get it down. I also think the key of E is a big pain in the neck.
The only reason I want one is because my band *especially the guitarists* always insist on playing in E. It is because on the guitar, in the key of E, you don't have to play "real" chords. You can plat make shift power chords which is just stupid!
Basically, there a bunch of musical bums. lol :shakefist:

Which is why when I was a guitarist I always downtuned and played in C or C#. I liked the sound of C# but damn was it a pain!

Just buy him a capo. A capo in the third fret and his guitar plays G instead of E. ;)
