I wholeheartedly have no particular preferences. My favourite ocarinas have either type of subholes, and it doesn't really affect my playing at all. |

I'm partial to Japanese subholes myself. My dragontooth has both and I have a hard time using the left hand one even though I'm left handed. |

I'm left-handed, and it makes no difference to me, in terms of playing. Even though I'm more used to Japanese style fingering. Therefore I vote for looks alone, and Japanese takes the cake. To be honest, though, I prefer the look of 13-holed ocarinas. |

I rather the japanese fingering, with my Taiwanese ocarina I seem to miss the upper sub-hole 9 times out of 10. I wouldn't think left/right handed would change the preference for you Bat as Panch has mentioned. Most likely it's whichever you're mostly used to, did you begin with a Taiwanese sub-hole layout? and Moonsyne, are you serious there? I guess it does make things easier |

I don't have a preference simply because I have no ocs with the Japanese layout. All Taiwanese for me. |

I prefer the taiwanese here. I'm not sure if it's the subholes or the dragontooth itself, but that's my only jap sub ocarina and it hasn't been very kind to me, haha! |

Whoo, ten votes each! I like the Japanese ones, but mostly because more of the really nice ocarinas tend to have Japanese subholes, and hence I'll put more effort into practicing with those. That, and I've only ever had an STL with Taiwanese subholes, which was a less-than-great experience! |

Because my preferred ocarina is a Focalink, i would say Taiwanese...however, since getting my Maparam Double Soprano F, i've adapted well to the Japanese sub-hole placements. So all in all, i don't really have a preference now. As long as the sub-holes work fine, i don't mind which placement they are. You should have an extra poll choice saying 'both'

Seeing as how I only own one oc with sub-holes, I don't really have a preference (my Noble is on the Japanese system it would seem). I DO want to try a Taiwanese system though.. |

I only have one 12-hole, which is in Japanese style. The first two or so days I thought a Taiwanese styled model might have been easier to start on. I don't remember the exact reason, but I tried both ways as if the holes where there, and the movement you make for Taiwanese felt more natural. Especially when switching from subtonic A to B or Bb and back. But soon after I started seeing the profit of Japanese style. Switching between low A, B and Bb are rare, and in my opinion low A is (after a day or two of getting used to the ocarina) easier to reach using two fingers right next to eachother than two fingers on complete different hands. But still, I have never even seen a Taiwanese subhole layout in real life. I based this on trying out the movements out without actually being able to compare them in action, so you should take my opinion with a grain of salt. I do intend trying a Taiwanese style oc with my next purchase. (edit: lol, I just made the poll a tie by voting Japanese. xD 12 votes for Japanese and 12 votes for Taiwanese) Edited by SpencervdM, Mar 11 2010, 07:35 PM.

Every time I've looked, there's been a difference of 1 or less between the two. I'd say it's pretty even. |

Same here. I have not (yet?) seen a difference of 2 or more, which is a pretty interesting fact. It proves that the opinions are really divided, and there does not seem to be a dominant style in the "Western" ocarina community.

I voted for Japanese, but honestly I'm pretty torn. I do absolutely love the way the Japanese style subholes feel on my Maparam double, and for songs where I have to switch from a B to Bb or from a C# to Bb (I have had to do both) that style seems to be most friendly. However, I've also never really had any issue at all with the Taiwanese system, and in fact my Focalink Triple, and Focalink Plastic Soprano, the two ocarinas I currently use most use the Taiwanese subhole system. I don't know though, I like them both, however the Japanese system gets a slight win for me because of the slight relative ease with which I can switch which subhole I'm holding. |

I have a hard time even reaching the subholes. >< I sometimes try to alter the songs if possible so that I don't have to deal with them. But I've only had a Japanese style ocarina, so maybe the Taiwanese style would be easier. |

I might be down to the OOT being a very bulbous ocarina. Because it has a bit of a steep curve for you to run your fingers up when reaching the subholes, they're a lot harder to reach than subholes on a flat surface. |

I prefer the Taiwanese style, but I also want to be able to play the Japanese style... because someday, I want a Panch and a Woodsound. They are both so pretty I can hardly stand it. |

I rather prefer the Japanese style, I think it's a lot simpler and cleaner by having everything on the same side. |
