My poor fingers!; Does this happen to you too?

After a lengthy practice session the other day, I was having a little chat with my father, and all of a sudden, he was like, "Oh my god! What happened to your fingers! Are you ok!? Oh my god!!!"

Spoiler: click to toggle

It doesn't hurt, and my fingers don't bleed or blister or get calluses or anything, but I just thought it was kind of funny, how weirded out my father got about it, hah. Perhaps I am gripping my ocarina too tightly, but I am still pretty newbtastic right now. I'm sure a softer grip will come with practice and as I gain confidence.

Do you get silly marks like this on your fingers when you practice too?

I got that when I first started playing, never do any more. I don't think I ever got it on all of my fingers though.

I used to get that when I started. I think you just naturally start gripping the ocarina less tightly. That said, moving back to my STL OOT, the holes were pretty big, so my fingers dipped inside them quite a lot.
I still get it on my eczema eaten left pinky, but the finger is horrible and defective and scrawny anyway. It's just... Weird, so it doesn't bother me much.

You have very Elegent hands!

I think it's natural to grip too tightly while you learn. Having so many holes to cover isn't easy to coordinated, but eventually youl loosen up!

In love with Ocarina di Budrio

It is nothing to worry about. In time you'll relax and hold the ocarina more gently. When I started playing I was holding the ocarina to tightly too, but I had the other very common problem: my left pinky got cramped and hurt for several hours and I was unable to play fast passages on the piano with my left hand smoothly. I got very worried about it and even thought about giving up on playing the ocarina.

However, there is a simple solution to both of these problems (and there are many other benefits to this approach): short practice sessions. When you're just starting out, don't play for more than 15-20 minutes at once. It's much better to play 3 times for 10 minutes every day than 6 hours twice a week. Your hands, lungs, throat and brain will not get tired. And your playing will improve much faster, because you learn much better when you're not tired and you don't forget what you've learned between practice sessions. Occasional long practice sessions separated by pauses of two, three (or more) days are pretty much useless and even contra productive so you should avoid them. When practicing a skill such as playing an instrument, the most important thing is continuity. When you get more comfortable with your ocarina, you might want to extend your practice sessions, play for one or two hours, but always take a break when you feel tired.

And of course, play every day, even if only for 5 minutes.

It used to happen to me a lot but it doesn't anymore. I guess it was because I was so afraid of dropping my Oot. :)

lol . . .that picture is epic 8D

Perhaps to help with your confidence you should simply wear the neck strap, so you don't worry about dropping it and subconsciously hold it less tightly. :) ITs nice that your dad cared about you like that instead of writing it off 8D They do kinda look like blisters. Definitly go with Kc's advice :3 You don't want your parents getting worried now.

@ Faolan: Thimbles!!!! Perhaps that is from whence those brass guitar slides originated! :evillaugh:

@ Pen_Anima: Mine doesn't have a neck strap! I am doomed to practice on my bed with tons of pillows around!

Nah, it was a 12 hole, I just don't think I held it quite that hard.

I've never gotten this before, other then my pinky in my left hand. It might be that you have very delicate hands.

I'm getting this now too :D

I think it's a combination of not being used to holding an ocarina and of being scared of dropping it (and pressing down harder than necessary because you don't know how to efficiently cover the holes yet) ... I know it's like that for me at least ^^; (I'm even getting cramp in my left hand after a few minutes *sighs*)... Just learn to relax a bit I guess? :)

My thumbs get cramped from the weight of my double... usually when i'm playing through a long song. But yeah, learning to relax is important. Usually laying your fingers gently over the hole is enough.

When I first started I had that problem too.

Like peepz already said, it's mainly because in the beginning it's a bid akward to hold an ocarina, and
there's a fear of dropping it.
I had it with my first pendant & my first transverse, and also when got my first double. I was scared I would drop it while switching chambers, so I used a neckstrap for a while.

After a while you won't be doing it anymore. C:

I grip my ocarina too hard sometimes too and my left hand starts to hurt from the strain. It'll probably go away over time. You know, when you think you are less likely to drop your ocarina and you have more confidence. :)

They make this putty stuff that dries hard on your fingers. You can use that if you're a pansy. XP  :evillaugh:
I wouldn't suggest it because 1). Its for pansies and 2). your fingers won't harden.
Besides, life's no fun without a little pain! :wat:

Would it help if you sat on the floor while you play? It was a while before I started playing in chairs and while standing up. I actually did drop my plastic pendant once, but since it was plastic it got off with just a scratch.

@ jackspace111: I DO already sit on the (carpeted) floor! And also on my bed (which is really low to the ground). I guess I am just super-paranoid of dropping it or something! Even though I've been playing since December and I have NEVER dropped an ocarina once yet! Oh, dear, I hope the first time I drop it (it is nearly inevitable, no?) that I am sitting on my bed with lots of cushyness all around me, hah.

Never had that happen but my fingers are pretty tough. I do know that beginner guitar players get deep lines/grooves from the strings though. It fades with time.

When I used to play the recorder, the teacher would always say that is your fingers didn't do that after practicing, you weren't holding it hard enough. Idk if the same goes for ocarina (or if the teacher was even right for the matter), but if it doesn't hurt I guess it's a good thing since you are covering all of the holes well.

I'm pretty sure your teacher is wrong. You should always relax your hands when playing. Of course, when closing holes, making a good, air-tight seal is important, but that can be easily done with relaxed hands.

You need your fingers to be agile and quick. That is impossible if they are stiff or if you're holding the instrument too hard.
