That's what I was saying I thought you meant, and hence suggested the Woodsound transverse double as an alternative to the Hind double. My single Woodsounds are very dynamic, and with similar tastes to yourself, I think it would suit you very well, as well as being a durable double. I personally... Really detest type-ones, but I think with the Woodsound double you would have a dynamic, durable double. D, D, D, D, D... Did it sound like I was suggesting the Hind double before? What I meant to get across was not to get the Hind double before it wasn't very dynamic, and that you might prefer the Woodsound double, as it's a very dynamic type-two. |

No, it didn't sound like you were suggesting the Hind double. I was only responding to your comment "I'm not sure what put you off about the Hind doubles...", and that's simply that they don't fit the way I play. I may look into the Woodsound double. I didn't know it existed. Ubizmo |

Oh! That wasn't a 'Hind doubles are great, if you don't like them then you're wrong' comment - I wouldn't enjoy playing one either. I was asking because I know you like inlines, and I was wondering whether it was the fact it was a type-one put you off, or if it was something related to transverse doubles in general. Hyunil Ko's email's on the Woodsound website. Provided you email him with Gmail, he should reply quite promptly. I heard he was making them for sale now, but I haven't asked myself - I asked in December and I don't want to be a bother! |

The reason I went with hind instead of woodsound was mainly because I hate having to drastically cut breath for subtonics, I don't mind rising breath for high notes tho. The other two reasons were stock and shipping if anyone was wondering. I wood love a woodsound oneday tho!

Woodsounds use pretty much the same breath pressure for the C as they do the B and A... Maybe the same on the B, and a tiny bit less on the A? It's hard to tell. It takes... Between fifteen and twenty days to make an ocarina (much less than Hind!) and two or three days, and $30 as a flat rate to ship. I don't... Really see those things as applying to Woodsound, or a problem. Some type-twos, like WPNs in particular, require a breath pressure drop, but only some of them. |

I do like inlines, and I'm not thrilled with the transverse design, but from my perspective, many doubles are quasi-inline anyway. I've never played one, but that's the impression I get from looking at photos. Usually, the 2nd chamber tone holes are almost completely in line with the windway, and the 1st chamber is angled in, but not very much. Ergonomically, turning the left hand in as a lot less objectionable than turning the right hand out. So, I have no ergonomic issues with most of the doubles I've seen. The Hind double transverse, though, is closer to "classic" transverse design, which is another strike against it, in my book. I suppose we're getting off-topic. In terms of innovation and doubles, I do think the MaxRange is a breakthrough. I agree with Ocarev's position that one extra note is not worth either the financial or structural overhead of a third chamber. Like you, I appreciate the simplicity of ocarinas. One chamber is simpler than two, and two are simpler than three. The addition of keys might extend the range a bit, or make the ocarina more orchestra-friendly, but I'm personally not interested in that. I think the ocarina is at its best solo or in small ensembles. Ubizmo |

I do think an e-oc based off a wind midi controller (they're out there) would actually work pretty well. I feel that it would be better to build it in a way where it would have a USB interface as well as headphones to cut down on the whole ocarina unfriendly for tight living spaces thing. Hmm... I have a soldering iron, and a basic knowledge of the electronics... I have a friend who does coding, I might just look up the wiring diagrams for a wind midi controller, see if I can build at least the basic model. |

I think an ocarina that had an adjustable end would be cool so you could have 1 ocarina with different keys. I don't think this is possible due to the acoustics of the ocarina though. So it would be like a 12 string guitar. Same notes played simultaneously just in 2 different octaves. This concept is known as unison. It gives an instrument a beautiful natural chorus effect. This effect is due to the subtle differences in the frequencies produced by each of the two sound-holes on the same course. Edited by 杰里米亚, Feb 26 2010, 08:16 PM.

I would love to have an E-oc. Imagine having an ocarina which can switch keys. While it would be nice to have an ocarina like that, it will never replace a real one. The E-oc may imitated an actually ocarina, but will never be able to capture the same emotion and beauty of the real one. But then again the E-oc shouldn't be intended to be a replacement. |

I just started an E-Oc project bro you can check it out here http://e-oc.blogspot.com but yeah, I am finding the same problems with my design you just cant put emotion into an E-Oc like you can a real OC/ I mean I have only been playing one a really short amount of time, and I just recently ordered a very crappy, 12 hole sweet potato, right now all I got is a four hole pendent. I have been playing woodwinds for a while though, started with the flute in highschool, got a lot of crap about that. So I am doing pretty well with the OC. Thing I like about woodwinds, that I am loving about the Oc, cause its a holed and not keyed woodwind is that you can do so much to express feeling with your music. You can play the same song the same way, yet show so much different emotion each time. |

That would be cool but I think it might go against his design philosophy, and he seems pretty resistant to creating alternative variations of products due to the overhead cost and effort needed for new tooling. |

I don't know about the possibility of a Mountain Transverse, when you read about their reasons for going with the inline style, they sound pretty anti-transverse. Personally I was really excited to see ocarevolution's triple-range double come out. I thought that was a pretty rad innovation. I think I'll keep an eye toward what he's working on, and if I have the money buy some of his designs to support the further innovation. Personally I would like to see more done in the Tenor range. Currently you have altos then basses, and nothing inbetween. That wouldn't be so much an "innovation" so much as just different keys, but I always like to see stuff that adds a little variety. |

Yes the MaxRange double is innovative, but one note shy of being a triple. ocarevolutionary mentioned that it was capable of getting that one extra note, but was "sacrificed".
I think sacrificing the extra note may have partly been marketing strategy. Could you imagine if the MaxRange was released with it's full capability? More people might buy it and stop buying other triples sold by STL. That would be shooting themselves in the foot as far as triple sales go. Also tying into this is that ocarevolutionary mentioned he was working on a quad range triple. Since many people are satisfied with the range of a normal triple, if the MaxRange was released with full capability of a triple, this would affect any future sale of a quad range triple. In the end it is innovation with a mixture of marketing strategy. I do believe the MaxRange double has a patent pending on it. I wonder if the patent will belong to ocarevolutionary or STL. |

The problem with something that would only get louder is the physics of air inside the ocarina. As you blow harder the air moves faster, as the air moves faster, it vibrates the chamber faster, making the note a higher pitch. An e-Oc could do this sort of variable volume one, but the once we have now are sadly limited by those pesky laws of physics. (Cue Scotty now saying "I cannot break the laws of physics captain" and then cue such an ocarina being released) |

Doesn't matter, I'd still be interested I used to have a cool stone collection (yes, really) and I had some amethysts and stuff, so that's rather more my style anyway. With 'bling' I didn't actually mean rapper-like golden chains hanging down from it, or something completely covered in fake diamonds or whatever *lol*. I'd just like something extra pretty for special occasions. Look at it this way: if ocarinas were cars, I'd want a ferrari. Or if they were mobile phones, I'd want a ladyphone rather than a regular black phone. So maybe that's what I'm looking for, an ocarina especially made for women

@ sirhalos and 杰里米亚: I recall seeing, years ago, a key-changing ocarina on ebay. It was a twelve-hole transverse and had a plunger-type thingy on the end that could be adjusted to change the size of chamber, thus changing the key. It looked pretty old. As I recall, it had a dark-blue glaze and some sort of American-themed decoration on it, a flag or something. This was before the existence of TON, STL, Mountain, Songbird, Focalink or really any way of getting an oc except for an old one on ebay and one or two individuals who sold their own creations online. I ended up with on out-of-key, hundred-year-old Austrian oc, and I always wished I'd had the money for that key-changing ocarina because I thought it would have let me play more stuff. I'm really curious about it now. |

I didn't read everyone's replies, so sorry if I repeated what someone said already. Here's my idea, a durable-material ocarina that has a part for an attachable(think something like lego, or like something you can snap on)second chamber, and that second chamber has a part so you can attach a third chamber. The big idea is, you can buy a regular 12 hole, and when/if you want to upgrade, you only gotta buy the attachment, and when you want to upgrade again, just another attachment, much more cost-effective than springing for a double ocarina and then a triple ocarina. Also, you'd never have to move on from your endeared first ocarina. =) Think of the possibilities! You could mix and match colors and stuff! The novelty alone, it'd sell like hotcakes! |

Some of Focalink's colours are way to bright for my taste. And some of STL's colour choices are very stylish. WPN's and OcRev's glazes tend to make me feel a bit 'car sick'. I guess it reminds me of nasty, old lady, arts and crafts pottery. I really like all of Focalink's colours, even his bright ones. They're nice, bright, and simple. I'd like one of every colour! Focalink made a nice choice with their glaze. I just find WPN's glazes too dull, and a bit sloppy looking. Focalink's, on the other hand, look crisp, just think enough, without being slopped on, and use clean, fresh and bright colours. As for MapArams, looking at photos that aren't those from the website, the colour has grown on me. I used to hate how they look, but as I was telling Panch last night, I've fallen for them. Clean, smooth, professional... I adore them in every way, even though they weren't, before now, my top choice of shape. The small holes on the AC don't interfere with the bulbous body, and it's just... So lovely... What was I talking about? Oh! Photos from owners of MapArams have made me come around to the colour. It's not the orangey-peach it looks like on MapAram's product pages... They tend to range from that colour, to an almost white colour, and are often a few shades darker than Crowler brand paint 'Pancake Batter'. |
