Old topic - closed. -speckles- Hi. About 2 days ago I bought a Focalink double soprano-G. M.r. Zack Shih emailed me and said:
So it wont be sent to me untill Feb. 22  Im sure its worth the wait!  If anybody else here already has this ocarina I would love to hear your opinions on it

Yeah, "Chinese"* New Year is VERY big in Asia. Maparam has their shipping delayed til around then too. As for the ocarina itself, it's exactly how it looks. A versatile Soprano G ocarina with 2 octaves. I remember it taking some time to get used to at first, as I wasn't used to holding such a small Double ocarina. But now it's one of the most comfortable ocarinas to play. *- No offence to the Chinese, but I don't really like the term "Chinese New Year". Every Asian country that uses the Lunar calendar celebrates the same date. I think "Lunar New Year" or "Asian New Year" is a more politically correct term. And don't get me started on "Chinese Cabbage"

When I first got this ocarina, I was disappointed. Not that it was not excellent quality or that I did not know yet how to play it. I was happy with the size and the ease of play. I thought it was lovely to look at. I was sad because maybe I should have saved more and went for the Alto. If one owns a soprano 12 hole, the second chamber goes UP in pitch from there. In retrospect, I over anticipated. Nothing could live up to that hype. As an ocarina, there are no faults I could mention. A lovely instrument. |

Yes, those terms are more politically correct that "Chinese New Year," and I even prefer to call it the Lunar New Year. However, the main reason it is called Chinese New Year is because 1) it was mostly the Chinese who brought the celebration to other countries (like Canada, the US, and Australia), and 2) because most of the celebrations and customs of the festival (like the wearing of red, the fire crackers, the lion/dragon dances) are adaptations of a Han Chinese customary precaution against a monster called the Nian, who hates the colour red and loud noises and would eat children around this time. So while the date is more common to all Lunar calendar countries, the celebration customs mostly originated in China. Hence, "Chinese New Year." @Zombifewd1, unlucky break, to order your oc as soon as Mr. Shih went on holidays. At least he was kind enough to tell you that it would be late. I'm sure it will be well worth the wait. |

It sucks that the order of your Double Soprano G was delayed due to holidays. But at least you'll get a high quality ocarina from what I've heard from everyone who owns one. I myself want to get one, but I'll probably be sometime in March or April when I do save up the money to order one. Trust me, Desmond, you'll like it. |

ivanduzer - Quite a thorough exploration! I also think it's called CNY simply because this is the English name for it. For example, Valentine's day is called "Western Valentine's Day" in Chinese because the Chinese have their own Valentine's day as well. It's all in the language. Zombie -- congrats on getting a Focalink! You'll see what everyone raves about when it comes to Focalinks. Do expect heavy delays even after Mr. Shih mails the package out. When work finally resumes, the post office has to deal with about four to five days of backed up mail that was already in the system when the holidays began. |

I have the Double SG...It's a great ocarina no doubt. Obviously it's VERY high pitched in the second chamber so be aware. I have a hard time playing it (though admittedly I haven't given it much effort yet) because my fingers are kind of stubby and it's nearly impossible for me not to cover the extra air hole on the second chamber, but I think with a bit of practice I can learn to use it well. So far I've only used it in one vid, which you can see HERE if you like.

That's fantastic Desmond! Shame about the delay, but once it is posted it will arrive to you very quickly! I have the Double Soprano G, and it is one of my most-played ocarinas, and it is the one i take around with me and play outside. I love it very much, i'm sure you will be over the moon when you get it

does any one have a copy of the fingering chart? i am still waiting for my double sop g so id like to take a look at it and get an idea on the fingerings! but i will probably receive mine a bit sooner since i ordered mine through ted so i can save on shipping! on another note this will be my first double ocarina so u guys got any tips for me on the chamber switching or some songs that would fit well on it? |

I have the Double SG and here is my opinion on it: + Has a professional look. + Flawless tone. (When blown correctly, no airyness.) + Easy to use Subholes. +/- Inconsistent tone between chambers. +/- The tone is hard to describe but its unique. - The first note on the second chamber is very easily overblown to a squeak. - I hate, and I mean hate the Double hole for C and C# on th second chamber. So awkward. Overall a very nice Ocarina in the key of G. I really hope you enjoy it! Oh and before he sends it make sure to ask for one that has a neckstrap hole if you want it. My Double SG came without one. Toeto FTW! |

That's lovely David. You got an especially lighter-coloured one with plenty of brown. Looks very pretty! (and somehow delicious). The Focalink Double SG is one of my favourite ocarinas today, but as I mentioned earlier, it took some getting used to. I had to get used to the amount of breath needed on the first chamber not to sound flat, and the second chamber, to produce a tone similar to the first chamber's. At first, the second chamber's tone may seem bizarre and thin, but it does change a lot depending on how familiar you are with it. I'm not quite sure how, but it does. The second thing was, as Elven mentioned, that double hole on the second chamber. I accidently covered it a lot at first. But this too, is something that you get used to. I actually find it to be a plus nowadays when playing notes like F#. I may have found it more difficult because I was used to Double ocarinas that didn't have that extra hole (Maparams) at the time. I would love a tiny double ocarina! That so cute, David!  I would like to see a size comparison between the double SG and MapAram's double SF. I don't imagine the double SF being all that small though... There doesn't seem to be much between it and MapAram's double AC. I must compare the soprano doubles! |

@kissing first off i love the finish on it! and the smell, i find strange but i like it! but to be honest im not too impressed, i expected more from focalink but maybe that is because i am new to the double oc and just need to practice with it? also i find it a bit too small for my hands but lets hold this as a time stamp and see how i feel about it a week from now!  @crowler hey if u got a map sf send it my way i would be glad to take some pics and do a comparison! lol  @markal you've got some skills! that video was great! My Maparam Double Soprano F is finally on its way, when it gets here i'll get you a comparison shot with the Focalink Double SG And David, that SG is lovely, i really like that yours is more brown, its really pretty. Mine is kind of just black with a few patches of light brown/yellow

Woohoo! I'm glad post wasn't held up for too long after New Year's. Yeah.. sopranos are tiny compared to altos, I definitely wasn't used to that when I had my Hind soprano. |
