Old topic - closed. -speckles- the question is "what has the ocarina done for you" but allow me to dive deeper there was a time that i couldnt even play an instrument.. apart from the drums. i tried guitar, piano, and bass... I couldnt even play a recorder... then i got an ocarina.. i thought this was a waste of money, i knew i would fail so hard at learning this, i was amazed when i picked up zelda's lullaby with great ease. and then i learned somewhere over the rainbow... and i was shocked, that i was ACTUALLY playing music! after a while, i decided to give another instrument a try. i picked up a yamaha keyboard for Ł15 at a car boot sale. and using what i had learned from the ocarina, i picked up a few songs, with just my left hand. again, this shocked me. (i can now play the keyboard quite well, i can play songs with both hands) i decided to learn sheetmusic to help with my ocarina playing... and i picked it up for the keyboard too! before i played the ocarina, i knew NOTHING about music theory... but now i read sheet music quite fluently. so, a few months ago, i decided to try some more wind instruments. i picked up 2 clarke tin whistles on eBay.. again, using knowledge of the ocarina, i started playing songs on my tinwhistle. i found it easier to learn songs by ear on the tinwhistle, and i still, today, use it for ear learning, and move it over to the ocarina. last week, my friend bought his sister a recorder... i HAD to give it another shot... i NEEDED to. i found myself playing it with great ease, using what i learned from the tinwhistle. i will be buying a harmonica (thank you blitz) and will soon be looking for a clarinet, to further my wind range ![]() so, in answer to the question. The ocarina, taught me to play music, on alot of instruments... but what has it done for you? Edited by speckles, May 18 2010, 05:46 AM.

Made me that much more awesome in select circles. Made me that much more a nerd in most circles. I don't get mad as often, because if something is bothering me, I just play my ocarina. And you are welcome for the harmonica. Edited by Blitz, Feb 8 2010, 01:45 AM.

Well I used to be a guitarist, years ago. I played for almost 5 years. I was learning very fast but the further I got the more obstacles I encountered. It turned out I have systemic arthritis and randomly my joints will lock up, unable to be moved until they rehydrate. I had to quit the guitar because it was too much stress on my joints. Instead of having a finger lock up once in a blue moon it was happening every few hours. I was rather devastated and quit playing music completely for almost 6 years. I had tried many instruments before I had settled on guitar and disliked them all, so when the desire to play music again came up I dismissed it saying "even if I could play an instrument, there are none I want to". I never played OoT, and I only knew of the ocarina as the little nameless flute link plays. (Again, I've only played LoZ LoZ2 LA aLttP OoS OoA). I came across one of Mr. Songbird's Pendant-OoTs for sale from ThinkGeek and it made me wonder, at the very least it would be a nice collectible! So I bought one and within a couple of days I found out that playing the ocarina doesn't cause enough stress on my joints to cause them to lock up. You can imagine how happy I am that I discovered ocarina playing, after 6 years of missing playing music I can once again enjoy music fully! |

It made me appreciate good music more, as well as further me into the music world (ocarina/choir are my main music connections, and often I have both working together for my own pleasure). |

I think I'm in a bad mood this morning. I thought this thread was called 'What The Hell Has The Ocarina Done For You?!'. H'anyway... I've always wanted to learn an instrument, and I suppose the ocarina has made this possible for Crowler, who doesn't have money or time for music lessons. It's given me the opportunity to express myself and play the music I've been longing to play for years, as well as give myself something I can put time and effort into, and get a worthwhile skill out of. I'm really glad I have the ocarina. It's given me something to really commit to. |

Really it's been my reconnection to music in general. There once was a time where I prided myself on being good at the violin but one day I just stopped for reasons unknown to me. Over the years I'd try picking up a few instruments here in there but nothing would really stick with me until I picked up my old ocarina again which I had kept out in the open for being a Zelda collectible. My main objective was just to try playing a few tunes to pass the time and nostalgia sake, but after a certain point I couldn't put the thing down! Something was different that time around. Over the past couple months I've learned music theory, learned to read sheet music, joined this this ever-so-helpful site, bought a higher quality ocarina, started to record and critique my playing online, and am slowly easing my way into the tin whistle while occasionally dabbling in other random instruments that my friends own that actually understand now! Also have a higher appreciation for instrumental music. My tastes has completely changed from whatever I would have listened to back in the day haha. Edited by bootybuttah, Feb 8 2010, 06:07 PM.

I've gotten a more flexible neck, especially turned to the left. Also permanent circle imprints on my fingers from pressing the tone holes so much. Oh, I can't forget about the constant ringing in my ears from playing a soprano c's highest note at full volume. All kidding aside, I get a lot of enjoyment from playing the ocarina. I've even got my nieces interested in playing. Their mom got made at me though because sometimes they would rather play ocarina then do homework, so I have to remind the girls to set their priorities straight (That's part of the job of being a good uncle though ).

At her very beginning
|
The ocarina is a nice instrument and it was my first wind instrument to learn and I'm still amazed by it. I love the portability of my soprano g everytime I feel bad I can get it and play the bad mood out of my heart. (I'm sorry, but music is the thing that keeps me alive - I couldn't live without music) The ocarina gave me alot of creativity for example for composing, it inspires me to far more rearranging and composing than the guitar has done - maybe because it's rather rare. it was the first instrument which I could use for improvisation, that makes it even more special for me. There a lot of other instruments I want to learn as well, but I think I will keep on with the ocarina for a while. (Can't wait to get the double!!!!!)

I have always played the saxophone and never with great ease. I enjoy it but it's difficult; I have asthma and the breathing required is very demanding. I decided to try to ocarina as a lighter instrument, one that didn't need careful assembly every time, something I could carry with me and also something that wouldn't disturb the neighbours. I haven't been playing for very long but I already love it, in many ways it has restored my joy in music.

Buddies in asthma! I've found that my lung capacity has increased dramatically through playing the ocarina in only a few months. Perhaps if you keep up the ocarina you'll be able to improve your saxophone playing. I'm a good 400 some days on the peak flow meter now, which I'm very proud of! I think I read something else on TON about holding your breath for thirty seconds a few times a day or something, to increase lung capacity...

400?! Heh mines 340 on a good day. I find playing the ocarina much more comfortable than the saxophone (and not just because of the lack of neck ache). I find that keeping regular breathing pattern whilst swimming has helped slightly. I do hope my breathing will continue to improve, it used to be much worse (part of the reason I fell behind with the saxophone) but I'm determined to keep at it with the ocarina! |

This makes me smile and say "yes!" You play the ocarina and you start listening to music differently. It's partly just the effect of playing any instrument, but I believe it's also because the ocarina is so musically free, not indelibly associated with any particular musical genre. You hear a tin whistle and you think of Celtic music. You hear a sax and you think of jazz (I do, anyway). You hear an ocarina and you can go anywhere, so playing it opens your ears to a lot of music that you didn't pay much attention to before. What the ocarina has done for me is to bring music back into a busy life. I'm 56 and I've been playing one thing or another since I was 10--mostly sax, recorder, and so on. But when you finish high school, suddenly there's no band practice to go to anymore. Sure, you may go on to university and play in a band or orchestra there, if you have time, but that's just a few years and then... Most people put their instruments away and that's the end of it. I've never stopped playing, but when you're not in a band, just playing the sax alone is a little lonely. Not only that, it's loud, and it bothers people. You can't easily take it outside to play. So when you do play, it's about finding the right time, the right place, getting the sax out, putting it together, and so on. As a result, I played less and less. The ocarina bothers people too. Practicing an instrument is inherently annoying to people. But if they're bothered I can just go where they're not. And I can have it with me, so that whenever I get the urge to play, I just play. I end up playing much more than I did before. Ubizmo |

Music has always been an important part of my life. I played the piano and the church organ for some years before I started to study physics at the university. But I had less time to practice and had to give it up. I still played the piano from time to time, but as I wasn't as good as before, I gradually lost interest and started doing only physics. I continued to study music theory on my own, though, mostly harmony and counterpoint. I also had some personal problems and became quite depressed. And then, somewhat little less than two years ago, I discovered the ocarina and it helped me a lot. It is an instrument I can always find a little time to play and it makes me calm and happy. Now, I can't imagine my life without it.

I used to play violin, years ago. I really loved the sound of it, and in retrospect, I have no idea why I gave it up. It's still in my closet, horribly out-of-tune and A-string snapped. Two months ago I discovered the ocarina. I fell in love with the potential softness of the instrument, if you guys get what I'm saying. To me, the ocarina was so much more like playing the violin again than playing my screechy recorder or loud drums. While I still play my drums more than my ocarina, I know that it's always there for me to go to when I want to make something beautiful. |

I originally bought a simple songbird ocarina 9 years ago. I had gotten into it at that time, playing by ear and such but I didn't continue. Now, 9 years later, I got a Maparam, hoping I would have something to play again but with professional quality(in sound). At first I wasn't sure about it, since the notes sounded airy to the player(I was still a beginner). However, after having it for a few months I was able to realize the true quality of this instrument. Oddly, I also gained a bond with my ocarina, something I have never experienced before. Playing the instrument even reduces my stress significantly by which then sometimes, I just can't stop playing. I am also the shy type but playing the instrument in public helped reduce that as well. The ocarina for me, has not only made an impact but it has also improved my character on certain levels. Not to mention I even enjoy other activities better now considering how well the ocarina relaxes me. =) On the downside, it can drive my younger brother nuts. lol. |

The ocarina has given me peace of mind above all else. I've been drumming for almost ten years, but i always lamented not being able to play something melodical. My best friend plays the piano beautifully, and she often plays Studio Ghibli music when i'm around - as much as i enjoyed her playing, i wished i could do the same. Because the ocarina is so easy to pick up, i adjusted easily, and now i can play Ghibli songs (and many other songs) to my friends, which they very much enjoy. I'm more able to 'join in' now that i can play something melodical. I still love playing the drums, but the ocarina has given me much more musical freedom. The ocarina helps me calm down when i'm stressed, and i usually pick it up to play when taking breaks from hours of artwork. And finally, playing the ocarina has made my nan very happy too, as she and my grandad (before he died a long time ago) ran a little music shop and sold some from time to time. I think it reminds her of those days with him, and she tells me he'd be proud to know i picked it up. I'm a much happier person since i began playing the ocarina. For me learning to play the ocarina was sort of a fun thing that grew out of seeing people play on youtube (thank you StumbleUpon) and just escalating from there. I also play guitar, so I can greatly empathize with everyone who mentions anything about "must play music now". Ocarina has given me a nice portable instrument, that I can just whip out of my bag, or out of my pocket depending on which I decide to play, and just sit out in an open area and play my heart out. On days where I remember/am physically able to play I'm a much more relaxed individual because I have a tendency to pick the most cathartic songs I can if I'm in a bad mood, and to just play high tempo happy songs if I'm feeling bouncy that day. Over all, I'd have to say that the ocarina has handed me another way to express myself, has gotten me much needed compliments during moments I wasn't feeling well, and most importantly has given me a hobby I know will carry on well into the future. Also, with a planned career in law, I'll need stress relief, unless I want to die suddenly in a court room of heart attack, which I feel would be not so good. |

The ocarina has given me something to put my effort and skills into. I played the piano a lot by ear, years ago. I've always struggled with the feeling of not being really good at anything. So when I got good at playing by ear, I knew I had found my "thing". Then I moved away from home, and I always longed for playing music. I had thought about the ocarina, I knew it was a real instrument not just some videogame-toy thanks to the Docjazz4-videos. So I finally ordered my first from STL, and was very excited when it arrived!! After some practice I got better, and again felt like I was capable of being good at something + it lead me to TON, and the awesome people around here My next goal is to learn sheet-music. |

As of tomorrow... the ocarina will give me extra credit in my Intro to Classical Chinese class! When a classmate brought in her ancient Chinese instrument... of course I just had to pipe up and mention that I play an ancient instrument as well. Next thing I know my professor's asking me every class if I brought my instrument in. We-ell, I'll be debuting my Hind double tomorrow. I would ask another classmate to record it, but I think that may be a bit too odd. I'll just record it separately again for you guys.

It is something fun to do that helps me relax. I was forced into piano lessons as a kid and never picked it up, there was just a disconnect between the sheet music and my fingers. Since I'm so new I haven't fully broken that but I'm working on it. I've been transposing sheet music to tabs (slowly) and it is actually begun helping me relate notes to finger position. |

It's given me an obsession to spend money on. I really didn't anticipate the possibility of spending over $300 on ocarinas when I bought that $50 songbird 5-Hole. And odds are, I'll probably end up buying even more. (I've got to buy the songbird double-sprouted and after that, I'll probably end up buying a double) So... I guess it's giving me more motivation to get a high-paying job. |
