We have decided to get TON a mascot since about a year ago. We took about 6 months to decide it has to be a fox, but after that the project went cold. I think it's time to get the job done! I still stand with my opinion from 7 months ago:
So it's time to throw some ideas and concepts on the table and discuss! Personally, I like a mascot that is expressive, but still "natural". (i.e. not too far from the original anatomy of the animal) For example, even though I think it's too realistic for our purposes, I like [this] rather than [this]. I have also made a few drafts of something that came to my mind. Spoiler: click to toggle And if we go for two mascots, I suggest we name them Fuoco or Vento (male) and Creta (female), which is Italian for Fire, Wind and Clay respectively.  (do I even need to explain why Italian?)

Fuoco, Vento, and Creta? I'd say that we should have a group of three mascots (maybe the three finalists) with these three names. Fuoco the Fox, Vento the Goose, Creta the Panda? Perhaps one mascot for the three most popular TON themes? I can see it, definitely. Your idea is inspiring! But yeah, I don't know if this idea will get anywhere, so I'm probably just rambling to myself......

Why don't we make each animal related to its element? Fuoco(fire) the fox could be a fox made out of fire(like the firefox logo), which would make the mascots cooler... I have a good idea, though its more like a logo than a mascot... the three elements could kind of surround a small space in a sort of circle, and inside the circle, surrounded by the elements is some kind of awesome ocarina? That sounds cool Fuoco the Fox for Cream Dream, Vento the Goose for True Blue and Creta the Panda for... Green Tea?  It sounds original, but I'm not sure whether it's a good idea to make them represent the TON themes though.  But I was just thinking, Fire Wind and Clay really are the three elements of the traditional ocarina. You shape the clay, then fire it, and finally enter wind into it to activate it's 'magic'.

I think there should be one mascot, not three. If youre not planning on making some kind of comic/story out of it(then one would be a bit boring, hehe). |

Well, the community never truly came to a consensus on what animal should represent the community. Though the fox held the majority of the votes, it was not unanimous by any means. Since this is such a diverse community of people, how could only one animal represent it? |

@Bateleur: Before closing the previous thread here, Andy said the Fox had clearly won, so I thought it was save to assume that was the official outcome. But I do understand your point, and like to support it if we can find a good solution for using 3 mascots. Maybe we could set the pictures of the mascots to randomly display one of the three. But only now I realize that Andy didn't say "someone can start designing" but "Sone, you can start designing". Dyslexia.  I guess we should involve Sone into the discussion before the final mascot(s) is/are made. |

Sone has been quite busy with his life for a little bit, hence the lack of action on the mascot front. Out of respect for his feelings as original head designer, I'd like to ask him his thoughts on others proceeding with mascot designing. However, I personally don't see how it would hurt to have more opinions shared on what you guys think would best represent the community, so feel free to discuss away, but the admins will probably have a more definitive say on how things stand. |

I think the fox is cute, my only reservation is whether it would be confused with firefox. I saw an armadillo ocarina that looked fantastic (I normally don't like cutesy ocs) Maybe an armadillo vaguely ocarinaish would be interesting? Or maybe, a little goose? Ocarina means little goose right? A little goose playing an oc? I like the TON logo, but have second thoughts about buying a shirt with it on it in case people figure that's my weight. |

I made a draft sketch of three mascots based on Bateleur's input. I think my interpretation of the goose and panda pretty much fail as a mascot, but just for the idea. The staff, and especially Sone, should have the final say about the mascot. Otherwise we can discuss forever. And if Sone is still up for the job, he should by all means do the final design. This was originally his project after all. |

Well that mascot thing from a year ago was supposed to be Sone's big contribution to the forum, which was also part of his graphics design course. But some things came up in his life, and he could not finish what he started. So the mascot project was sort of put on halt. At this point, if the mascot thing goes forward, it can do so without his input. It's much easier for us as well as him. I see that there is considerable member interest in having the mascot(s). It's good to see that we want this idea to go forward. I think we'll have to appoint someone (or more than one person) to take charge of designing the mascots. From the look of this topic, it seems Spencer is a good candidate. It's already looking very good! If there are no huge objections, perhaps we could even stick to those designs as the basis, if Spencer doesn't mind. Edited by kissing, Jan 2 2010, 04:28 PM.

How about the octopus? get it? OCtopus?  Someone sketch one up, it can be holding 8 ocarinas, one for each arm. EDIT: the one in the picture has 6 arms  , but I'm sure someone can sketch something awesome or find a better graphic.

vento can have an inline, that way each mascot will hve one of the major types out there (excluding multi-chambered, since thery're sweet potatoes and peruvians)

I like that idea!  But I wanna make one named Fipple. XD I would think on a mascot that could combine all the elements of the oc's creation A newt. XD They can survive fire, burrow in the mud for hibernation (Um . . . .not sure on that one) and live near the water . . . . WOULDN'T IT BE CUTE!??! lol And i found my bamboo pen, so I can draw online again!!!! ^_^ |

Alright folks! We have decided to put Spencer and Panch in charge of designing the mascots. They will read peoples' suggestions and stuff here (they could even run a poll if they want) and have the final say (well before the TON staff make the approval) on what will happen with the mascots. If those two people could establish communication to get this organised and co-operate, that would be great

Maybe Vento should have something more to do with the oc. OR.. What did the names mean? Fire, Clay, and Wind? Then why not make them to something that has more to do with their element, and SHOW it. But the ocarina is a requirement if I'm the one to ask! So don't remove the oc.

I don't see the point of a mascot for TON. If anything it should be a Goose, a little one. Hopefully one pixel wide.

And if anyone else wants to make sketches too, I encourage them to do so. Even if you think your idea is far inferior to what we already have here, we might still be able to use some concepts out of them. Hmm, it seems I'll have to find contact with Panch some time soon. |
