Well, I was considering a uke long before it ever even occurred to me to get an ocarina. I'd been looking for a second instrument to learn, and bought a few others to try. Check out fretlesszithers.com, a site for information about some oddball instruments. I have a few examples of instruments featured on that site - a Hawaiian Tremoloa, a few different ukelins, pianolins, etc. I moved and they are still in my other place so I haven't gotten around to tuning/refurbishing and learning them yet. I'd like a hurdy gurdy, but they're way too expensive. Edited by Jafafa Hots, Dec 29 2009, 06:24 AM.

Anything from this eBay store is guaranteed to be a good uke: http://stores.ebay.com/Musicguymics-Room They make adjustments to the ukes they sell so its in its best playing potential. Even the cheapest Makala "Dolphin" ukes there are highly regarded by many Ukulele players around the world. If you want a uke, and can afford that one, go for it (I think they cost like $36 not including shipping)http://stores.ebay.com/Musicguymics-Room__W0QQ_sidZ34517586QQ_trksidZp4634Q2ec0Q2em14?_pgn=16 |

almost bought a uke today. Was leaning towards a tenor for a more rich, less toyish sound than a soprano..., but worried that would be too advanced. I had read that soprano caters more towards the traditional strumming, whereas tenor is more for picked melodies, more advanced. Then I read that a concert size is midway between the two, supposedly "the best of both worlds" etc. Any feedback on that? Thanks. |

You can strum and pick just as well on any sized Ukulele pretty much. A Tenor isn't really "more advanced" than a Soprano. There are professional players who use either sizes and they all do advanced strumming and picking (for example, Ohta-San who is said to be a living legend of the Ukulele and Roy Sakuma who is the most famous living ukulele teacher both play Soprano ukes). When you play them side to side, there are some differences. The string tension is tighter on the Tenor and softest on the Soprano. It doesn't really make a difference in the ability to strum or pick, but as a beginner I did find the Soprano more manageable because the strings were easier to press. But there's nothing wrong with starting on any size. Another difference is the fret spaces on each uke. Obviously the spaces between the frets for a Soprano are smaller than for a Tenor. Best way is if you're able to try the different sizes out yourself before making a decision. Even if its just some cheap Sopranos at a store, at least you'll get a feel for what Sopranos are like. If you feel that you'll feel comfortable with something bigger with wider fret spaces, then go for a Concert or Tenor. |

Actually, the original way to pronounce "ukulele" is like [ook-oo-le-le]. So by that pronunciation, "uke" would be pronounced [ook], in which case "an uke" would actually be correct. Big King XXL, your random posts are a bit suspicious. I really hope you're not on this forum for some dubious purpose. |

Yes, Kissing, it would be grammatically correct if the short form of ukulele followed long forms vowel rules, but it does not. I quite liked the idea of calling it an 'ook', but alas, t'is 'yook'

I have an Oscar Schmidt that I am not so thrilled with. It won't stay tuned!!!!!! I also have a cheap uke that stays tuned better and I play it more. The sound quality leaves a bit to be desired. I have my eye on a Flea Uke!!! I hear they are pretty good and stay tuned well. Any thoughts? |

I MUST HAVE ONE!!! But really, that's awesome. Here are some lame questions, if anyone's willing to answer: How much of a difference are there in playing techniques between mandolins and ukes? Would it be difficult to learn both simultaneously? You guys have seriously got me hooked haha |

The tuning of the mandolin different, and the double steel strings need much more force to handle than ukulele strings. And a mandolin is always played with a plectrum, but playing an ukulele with a plectrum sounds awful and won't allow you all the fancy strums that are the trademark of the ukulele. So both left hand technique and right hand technique are quite different on mandolin and ukulele. |

Be a man, play the MANdolin. ---Bateleur I actually held and fiddled with a ukelele at a music store not too long ago. It's an interesting little instrument. I don't actually hate it..... But it's so much fun to make fun of. XD The mandolin really has callused my index and middle fingers on my left hand. It's a tricky but rewarding instrument to play. I can't wait until I am at a skill level high enough to accompany my future ocarina videos with mandolin tremolo and such. But first..... I need to restring it. ![]() (but I'm doing that this weekend, so it's all good! =D ) |

I have just ordered a makala pineapple ![]() It arrived! my aquila strings arent here yet, but I just adjusted the action, but tbh, it was actually pretty good out of the box. These standard strings are pretty bad, and this isnt the finest made uke in the world, but I want to take it everywhere with me. Its so small! It isnt as easy to play as I'd hoped! I wish I could just start playing music straight away
