A generous member of the ocarina community has donated several great ocarinas to be used for a TON contest ![]() ![]() There are 4 ocarinas to be won, and so there will be 4 contests you can enter. 1. Essay contest Write an essay on the topic: Discuss how the ocarina benefits humankind in the past, present and future. Prize: TNG Purple clay Double ocarina in black. 2. Craft contest Make a "functional" (able to make a tone) ocarina out of the whackiest material and showcase it with a video, or combination of pictures and sound recording. Prize: Focalink Soprano C in white crackle. 3. Poetry contest Write a poem related to the ocarina and the community. Prize: WPN Double in green. 4. Performance and Composition contest Record an mp3 file or video of yourself playing a song that you have written yourself. note: You can't enter a composition that has already been used in a previous video or published recording. ie: Make a new composition for the contest! Prize: Focalink Alto C in jade colour. Video outlining the contest yet to be released Submitting entries Send your entry to theocarinanetwork@live.com Attach or provide links to pictures and sound recordings. Send videos as links (preferably Youtube). Make sure to include your username at TON. Entries close at the end of the year (31st December 2009) at the slowest timezone. Make sure your entries to the contest are all new material made specifically for the contest! (No re-using old material!) Edited by kissing, Nov 26 2009, 07:51 AM.

I wish I could join the forth contest, but I have no time to get something running until the 25th. By the way, the song doesn't have to be related to a topic, does it? |

We left it quite open ended without restrictions to allow members to be themselves and submit something they feel best suits the ocarina ![]() Do you feel that the end date is too tight? Perhaps it could be extended upon discussion with other staff. The last contest was open for 1 month, and I felt that Christmas would be a very easy date to remember. update: Date changed to December 31st Edited by kissing, Nov 25 2009, 03:04 PM.

The problem isn't that it is too tight, my only problem is that I have to do a lot during the next weeks so it might be hard for me to compose a new song up to then

*Camps out to wait for pictures* I haven't composed before, but I want a green ocarina... I want one bad. Can the composed piece be a remix, or medley of other pieces arranged together, or perhaps be centered around a well know piece, and playing that piece, but also playing around the piece, and with a twist? Must it be 100% original, I guess I'm saying, or can we steal bits to make our own piece, such as in the instances I suggested above? Also, totally doing the essay. As for the deadline... Since it's end-of-year, I'll suggest what I said to Goku, in that we know allot of people are getting ocarinas for Christmas (I hear the Dragon Tooth's a popular choice!) and it would be nice for people to be able to prepare something really special to be the recording with their brand new ocarinas! We could say entries must be in midnight in the latest time-zone on the final day of the year. That would be easy to remember, and would give people some days of no work or schooling to play with their ocarinas and record. |

I'll definately have a go at the poetry and maybe a chance of the essay, but no videos/recordings, they never turn out. A double sounds most exciting they seem complicated though. Looking forward to a great turnout of Creative talents from everybody. Taking a look at some of the other contests that have been an gone, there is incredible talent, talent that deserves recognition and what better way to share it among our community, we're all like a family ![]() Good Luck Everyone!

Thats a good idea. Actually, I'll just change it to that now. The only thing is that I won't be anywhere near a computer then (will be at a camp that goes over New Years). I guess I'll have to ask another member of staff to close the contest on time. Edited by kissing, Nov 25 2009, 02:55 PM.

I was already making an ocarina. It's a wooden inline. It's a cheap wood, but it is supposed to be pretty good quality (it's a certain type of quality whitewood (this type is called "grenen" in my country, which itself is a certain kind of "vuren", as far as I know, there isn't a proper English name for either one of these names) that is actually used in some musical instruments, although it is probably more well-known as the wood IKEA uses a lot for its furniture. I don't have much time, but I think I'll be able to finish it in time. I hope I'll just be able to tune it well. Gonna buy a chromatic tuner and some wood oil pretty soon. I'm almost done with making it hollow. If I succeed it might be cool to enter the performance contest as well. Unfortunately I can barely compose anything, but I know enough very talented people who can help me. I really want that Alto-C ocarina. My mother wants to play a duet with me, perhaps in front of some people, but I don't own two evenly tuned ocarinas yet, so that's not working. Edited by Vermin, Nov 25 2009, 09:09 PM.

In reference to the craft contest, how "Functional" is functional, should it be tuned to a certain key? 12 hole tuned? Or does it simply have to be able to play a song, or even just a few notes?

Well, I'm going to tune mine. The key of C will probably be the easiest. In other tunings you need to use accidentals on certain holes. Is there a limit to how many contests you're allowed to participate in? |

Able to make a tone at least ![]() Of course, the degree of functionality will also come to play in the judgment process. The more functional, the better - but the minimum is that it can make an audible tone. |

Sam, question about the composition/performance contest. How are the rules for editing on the performance part? Not talking about doing anything with the sound itself, but more of the likes of cutting such. Have some ideas, but I need this clarified first.

ATM I don't have much money. Just enough to finish my wooden ocarinas. Not a very "wacky" material, but I know something that doesn't cost and can almost be as flexible as actual clay. And it will definitely be an unexpected material. I just hope it will be able to make a proper tone. |

Lolz no, that would be a bit too wacky. The material I have in mind is even cheaper and slightly more tasty. But I'm not gonna say what material exactly. You'll see in time. I'm pretty sure there are enough weirder materials, so I hope I'll be able to tune it properly as well. I was already planning to buy a tuner, as I'll need it for my wooden oc, and that will be about the last thing I can buy for a full month. But ti will be worth it. Lolz, nice. I want to participate in the composing contest as well, but I'll need a lot of help. I really lack musical education, and I haven't been playing for long, so I just don't have the musical experience for making proper music. So far, i've only made a few short things. It doesn't sound bad IMHO, but it's nothing special. Just some beginners' stuff. My idea for the craft contest isn't very special either, so I'll have to get th etuning right. If it works out like I planned, I think I may have a good chance of winning. For the poetry contest, I have a great idea. It's extremely hard, but if I succeed, I'm sure I'll win. I hope I'll win one of these contests. I won't participate in the essay contest. I hate writing essays. I have had to do it way too often at school. Edited by Vermin, Nov 28 2009, 09:02 PM.
