In love with Ocarina di Budrio

Kurt Posch is a very good ocarina maker from Austria. His ocarinas were recommended to me by Emiliano Bernagozzi.

His webpage is http://www.ocarina.at/

I recently bought an ocarina from Paolo Gavelli which was made by Kurt Posch. It is a double alto/tenor ocarina in F (Budrian name would be Fa 4a, although it doesn't follow Budrian naming system).

Today it arrived and I wanted to share some photos with you. It's a very strange ocarina. It looks like an extraterrestrial version of the ocarina di Budrio. It has a very pleasant sound, not as strong and passionate as Menaglio's ocarinas, but a little louder than Pacchioni's. It seems to be a very good instrument (slightly better than Pacchioni, IMO, but not as great as Menaglio's). It uses a slightly rising breath pressure and there is no large discontinuity of breath pressure when switching chambers (which makes it relatively easy to play). I've only had this ocarina for a day, but the sound appears to be very, very clean - no noticeable airiness and texture in sound - exept on the low F (very different from Pacchioni's ocarina, and also quite different from Menaglio's). I still cannot play it perfectly in tune, but with practice I'll get there.

It uses a very strange fingering system. As you can see on the above pictures, the lower chamber doesn't have a thumb hole. It has a very strange subhole which is played with the left little figner. There is no hole for the left little finger, except this subhole, which is on a slightly elevated position. The range of the lower chamber is exactly one octave plus a semitone below the tonic, i.e. from E4 to F5. The ocarina is decorated with a little Swarovski crystal, just to the left of the left index finger hole. Very strange :D

The upper chamber has six holes, two of which are closed with the right thumb. Range of the upper chamber is from G5 to F6. I'm not sure if it is possible to play F#5 on this ocarina without using the "fipple bend" on the upper chamber (which is easy because your right thumb is free!). Very strange, indeed :D

There is a little defect near the fipple of the upper chamber which is a very small crack fixed with some glue, probably by the maker himself. It probably occurred during the firing. It's very stable and it doesn't seem to affect the sound. The ocarina is new - it was made in May 2009.

The lower chamber is very good for using the "fipple bend" with your chin or right thumb - with only a few minutes of practice I managed to play the low G3, i.e. a sixth below the deepest regular note! This is not very practical in actual songs, but it's extremely amazing.

It is the most strange and unique ocarina I have. I'm very pleased with it. I plan to make a review of it when I get a microphone.

Paolo Gavelli was very kind to include a very nice protective bag with it. I believe it's a Maparam case:

That looks very unique! You should review alot of your ocarinas, even if it is only text. I always wanted to know more about the original ocarinas of Europe.

Now am jealous.... :(

What else can I say about them? It seems to me I've covered pretty much everything what can be said in text about theme except the extreme details? Most likely I'm wrong.

Do you have any questions about my ocarinas that I can answer?

Here is a list of them

I recently ordered a very good semi-professional microphone (the one that Ocarinadiva uses in her videos, AKG Perception 220), but since I bought this Kurt Posch ocarina without planing, I'm a bit low on cash at the moment, so that has delayed the purchase of this microphone.

But soon, when I have the microphone I'll post some sound samples of them and record a few pieces. IMO, this is much better than writing a lot of text without any concrete proof (I'm good a that, but I don't think it's fair).

However, I'm happy to answer any questions in detail.

That is definitely a different-looking ocarina. It has that Italian-style to it, but definitely not the Italian-style fingering.

Not bad :)

I just bought three Posch ocarinas from Delorean - Do 1a, Sol 2a and Do 3a. He gave me a very fair price and even paid for the shipping. I tell you about them when they arrive.
They arrived today. I'm very happy with them. They have a very clean, crisp sound and are tuned very well (they have some wax on the edges of some holes, for tuning).

The three on the left are new and on the right is the double tenor F.
