The Obscure Ocarina Thread; More Love for the Less Known

No doubt there are certain makers on TON that get a lot of love. And there's a good chance that if you're on TON, you either own a Maparam, Focalink, STL(TNG), or all of the above!

But I'd like to shine some light on a few of the less known makers and their wonderful instruments. The other craftsmen who have spent years perfecting their ocarinas, yet people continue to pour their money into the more well known companies who can really afford to promote their products and have large customer bases already!

So here's what you do: List an ocarina or several ocarinas you have or you would like to have from less known makers around the world and tell us why you like them. The more obscure, the better. If it seems they have a large customer base or large online presence, try to highlight someone smaller.

Please do not list any ocarinas from Maparam, Focalink, or STL. I know this may be hard for certain TONians, but try to resist the urge

If you need ideas, check out the Regional Focus section of the forum or the Ocarina Maker Index in my new book, The Ocarina Guide, listing over 30 makers and 55 ocarinas throughout the book.

Here's Mine...

Ogawa Alto C - http://www.fl-oca.com/eocarina.htm
Spoiler: click to toggle

Quite possibly one of the greatest ocarinas ever made, lol. I love the look and the tone is absolutely gorgeous. This is what an ocarina is supposed to sound like XD It's a Type 1, but it actually has quite an impressive volume and is very expressive!

Peter Sloan 5 Hole Pendant- http://petersloan.ca

Is this not one of the coolest ocarinas you've ever seen? :D

Meh.

I love the ocarinas from Byimyrza Bazaar in Kyrgyzstan!

LINK to TON thread

They make wonderful sculptural ocarinas of the 7-hole variety. I'd love to have any of their sculptural Ibex or Ram ocarinas. Sure, they have a somewhat limited range, but they're in-tune with concert pitch (as far as I can tell), and I believe that the sculptural qualities make it wonderful collectible material.

Man I would love to get my hands on one of those...I've already got my heart set on getting a Focalink Double AC next so it will be a while before I can afford one. :(

Pretty weird site, it actually needs the "www.": http://www.fl-oca.com/eocarina.htm
Getting a 404 without it.

I love the looks of that "Peter Sloan 5 Hole Pendant", it almost looks ancient.

These things look like giant mud rocks but the sound is ridiculously amazing.

@HieronRemade:
I have an Alto D and recommend it :) John Langley's ocarinas aren't very expensive. Plus, he doesn't charge for shipping if you buy through his website.

I've been a subscriber to this guy's channel for some time. He plays a wide variety of obscure traditional Russian instruments, most of them with very striking sounds. I recommend his channel!

I love how unique it looks compared to other doubles on the market. The color. The texture of the surface. And I hear they sound beautiful! It also reminds me of my Ogawa, lol.

I assume type A by what you are saying, which is the same breath pressure throughout.

Zach Shih refers to Type 1 and 2 as Type A and B, respectively.
Types 1 and 2 have been the terminology used by the ocarina forum since OU days, if I recall correctly.

Panch, your ocarinas are all type 1, right? Even pressure throughout.

Do you have any plans to make type 2 ocarinas, those that require increasing breath pressure and sound louder on top notes?

Yeah, all type 1 so far. Those are what I'm best at, and what I enjoy listening to and playing most.

I've thought about extending my product range to type 2's too, though most likely this will only be done on request of the buyer after I have my site up and running. :)

I've also experimented with giving type 1's a strong volume and tone, too. These have the basic principles of a type one, but have a stronger and more characteristic sound.

Gah... with ocarinas, if you know what you're doing, there's so many unique and interesting tonal possibilities! I don't know which to choose!

WOW! Interesting! It's a bass quad that shares some visual similarities with Focalink's forte triple. The finish is interesting... it has a very plastic appearance reminiscent of school recorders... which I actually like! Pity the forth chamber doesn't look too much better than TNG's quad, but taking the angled natue of this design, it doesn't look as out-of-place. The fact that it's a bass means that it won't be overbearingly high, too!
Great find!

Sure. Contrabass-bass-tenor-alto-soprano...

Then, we can make an octo:

contrabass-bass-baritone-tenor-contralto-alto-soprano-sopranino

It's possible. Impracticality is the key to designing things, and creativity as well.

Here's an obscure ocarina. I have this totally stank ocarina from somewhere in Eastern Europe. It's shaped like a poo, and has ten equal-sized holes, and it doesn't make a sound. Its texture is rough, and it is painted reddish-orange, with white around the holes.

I think you should try. Once, I e-mailed Zack Shih about a Focalink especially designed for a Taiwanese reseller. He said that altough Focalink did not sell that model (after all, they were made in specific quantities for another company), he could buy one from them and send it to me.

In the Ocarina Guide ;)

Sorry...couldn't help it  In addition to my past discussions with fellow ocarinists about obscure ocarinas, I had to do a lot of research for the ocarina guide when compiling my maker's index at the end of the book and for the ocarina pictures throughout.

Actually, I think most of the ocarina makers I've mentioned so far are all in the regional focus section, but I'll try to find some makers that aren't :D
