Taking a break from Signature requests

It has been brought to our attention that 419 scammers are now targeting TON members - by setting up fake accounts and sending PMs.
If ANYONE receives a letter like this, file a CP report immediately and do not respond to the PM. Offending accounts will be immediately banned.

Letters are written something like this:
Spoiler: click to toggle

These letter are FAKE and written by criminals.
REPORT THEM IMMEDIATELY.

You wouldn't believe the number of people who actually fall for these emails. These scammers make huge amounts of money stealing from people with good intentions.
Plus they are harassing members.

We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams.
This is most likely a bot or group of bots which have been programmed to send spam to members through PM's. These have been a big problem for all sorts of message boards that I've been on in the past. (And many of the message boards were small and obscure! How they found them is beyond me!)

Anyway, thanks for the information. Let's all stay on lookout! :TON:

I imagine it's more the elderly who fall for this sorta stuff. We used to have quite a few come in when I worked at a major high street bank. It's a shame really, I mean it's only because they don't really understand that technology is being used for that sort of stuff. I always used to feel really bad for them when we had to explain that it was a well known scam, and they always said they felt really foolish :(

Anyway /offtopic

Ugh... man, that totally put me off my giggly mood. That didn't come to mind. It's not right that the elderly get tricked like that... :/

Anything that promises something for nothing- put both hands over your wallet and run away fast. There is no "free" anything.

Thanks for the heads-up. There are few places we can be unmolested anymore. That letter sure did crack me up though.

You can be sure that the scam works for some people or they wouldn't be doing it.

I know of people who have tried to do those fake checks. They ended up in jail, of course they didn't last there, don't remember why, I know my aunt/sister's (my grandparents adopted me and she's more of a sister to me than an aunt) friend was the one who tried it. You can end up in jail for doing this so don't do it!

Oh yeah scambaiting is awesome- I posted a link to 419eaters.com in the first post.
It takes intelligence, skill, and a LOT of organising to do well though- setting up several fake accounts and fake websites to keep them busy, while at the same time you have you know how to hide your own identity and IP addresses. Complicated stuff, but there are some hilarious stories to be read on 419eaters :)

It's a shame these crooks ever fool anyone. I read somewhere that there's a site where keep them busy and make them do crazy things. One of them convinced a guy to get a tattoo. I remember it was pretty funny.

Hehe that's what Scambaiting is! :) Scambaiters prevent the crooks from scamming people by tying up their time and resources on fake email addresses and wild goose chases :) Sometimes they convince the scammer to do something silly- like take a photo of themselves with a silly sign and then email it. These are regarded as trophies :D
Scambaiters see doing this as both a fun hobby and a good public service- humiliating the crooks and spreading the anti-419 word!
The links Speckles and I posted have some hilarious stories of scambaiting triumphs, it's well worth reading a few! :D

I've scam baited before a couple times several years ago. It was fun and at times really comical. The best part was getting a big thank you note and sometimes a small cheque in the mail from the FBI for helping catch some of these guys. I don't do it anymore though. It's not worth my time and the joke gets old after a while.

Oh Mai! That was absolutely the most heart-wrenching story I have ever heard. Sure! I'll take the money is it for some unexplained reason saves your life or whatever.

Someone should write a book based on this stuff. :?

419 Tears
It's the heart felt story of a young woman who grew up on a failing cocoa plantation. But after her parents were poisoned by the under-paid workers, her only hope is to send a large sum of money to a complete stranger on the other side of the world. But will the transaction go horribly wrong? Or will she end up meeting the man of her dreams?

It ends that she falls in love with the man that she sent the money too. They use the money to buy a mansion in Vatican City and live happily ever after.... Until she gets mysteriously poisoned and the man loses all of the money to funeral cost because she didn't have life insurance.... or something like that. Do you want that to happen to you? If not, don't reply to the PM and report the account right away. :)

i'm torn on this subject

on the one hand, its disgraceful that they can get away with things like this

on the other hand, anyone either silly enough, or inexperienced enough to fall for one of these scams has no business being on the internet unsupervised.

I had fun with one a few years ago, while in the military....

I got a similar letter from someone from "Africa whose parents had died and left a huge lump sum of money and wanted to get married to me." So, I just played along with it until I got bored, then I said, "Nah" after a couple of months of playing along. Then I marked it as spam, so.... it was pretty easy, but these days, viruses are more sophisticated, so don't any of you try what I did.

I'm just waiting for them to send a message along the lines of:

Hello, My name Mr cheonweoke Faderer and I am possession of a large quantity of stolen Ocarina. My grandfather have looked after me since I was little because my father was killed by unnamed gunman and my mother died of Aids. On his deathbed, my grandfather gave to me the locations of his hidden Ocarina fortune. My governments are asking me questions about this however, and are keeping watch over me. If you can assist me in moving these Ocarina out of my country, then I will return favour and give you Ocarina worth a grand total ₤2,137 Great British Pounds.

I am awaiting your assistancs.

Oh, I never reply to anyone like that anyway. I know there were once legitimate people who would ask for help in a manner similar to this, but it took crooks, pirates, and scammers along with a crap load of copycats to ruin it for us honest people.

My oh my, has our society turned into a bunch of liars, cheaters, and thieves (a majority of them, anyway)
