I have somewhat previous experience with making ocarinas before, but it has been such a long time I am sure to have forgotten the skill.Today I will have no mold to work with. Are their any ideas of how to make an ocarina competely by hand?I will most likely purchase the clay from an arts and crafts shop in my town called "micheals"(sorry for spelling).I have heard many ways of makng ocarinas such as using a baloon? The mold wrap.I am not sure what hole sizings I should use but I will be sure to make large subholes.I will probably try to influence my ocarinas by the maparam alto c.I have no intent of selling them yet.I am hoping that you can help me make the sound hole.I am not sure when I will buy the clay but it will most likely be today if not tomorrow.Thank you for reading this and I am awaiting your response. -Desmond

the easiest way to make ocarinas by hand, and the method i use, is to make the shape of the ocarina solid simply by minipulating the ball of clay. then use a fishing wire to cute the ocarina in half (making sure that the mouth piece is not cut and stays on only one half) then hollow out both sides (again do not disturb the mouthpiece). once both halves are hollow and smooth you can start making the holes and the windway.

I use Tsukasa's method as well. I make the voice hole before putting the two halves back together, and put in the fingerholes afterwards. I find it much easier to get the fipple straight and clean when you can work with it from both sides. Then, tuning is really simple once the oc is in one piece; just put in and tune the holes one by one. Purposely make them too small, and then slowly enlarge them till they play in tune. This way, there's very little room for error. It's easy to make a hole larger, but difficult to make it smaller.

EDIT: And by the way, when you get to tuning, start with the subholes first. If you do those last, you'll have to retune all the other holes you've already made. I found this out the hard way.

I think I saw a thread somewhere about making ocarinas completely by hand, no doubt in the Ocarina Making forum. Other than that, I have no experience to share. Hope you have fun!

the sound hole should beee muccch smaller and when cutting out the bevel try to keep it as close to the outside wall as possible without breaking. this way you wont have such a deep gash, but rather a more organic little ramp. but this looks pretty good for a first go. i think you simply need to work on making the soundhole smaller, and remember that the windway should be the same in diameter as the soundhole itself so that no air goes to the sides and makes air noises.

Yes, like Tsukasa1991 said.
The ramp is too steep. You can tell by the deep shadow on the one side. It should be a more gradual slope. The sould hole should also have a more symmetrical shape, be it round, oval, rectangular or square.

Also, the exit slot of the mouthpiece may be too tall (from top to bottom).

Tsukasa1991 pretty much summed up the method I have been using. It's fun to play around with, and it's not something you'll get bored with too easily.
