My FBM was right in that I definitely didn't mean my comments in any seriousness. It was pure jealousy that you got one of the first doubles. And in fact, I agree with your commercial assessments. As the ocarina continues to grow in popularity, those finely crafted by hand will increase in value, especially in light of the loving care and craftsmanship Mr. Hind shows in his. At least you're making a sound investment! A Hind ocarina will likely retain all of its value, if not increase.Mr. Hind thank you for satisfying my curiosity regarding your career. I'm slightly spazzing out over my future career right now, but I think your last qualification effectively rules out me following in your footsteps. And a PS -- I'll be able to supply an address tomorrow. My work takes me out of town most of the week, it's a wee bit inconvenient this way. And I just moved into my new place, as in literally pack up my stuff and dump it on the floor. |

That's a good idea. Thanks; I just added it. Shadowyi...I do have a little purpleheart left, but I think you'll be happier with rosewood. Wait till I get my new wood in a couple of weeks and I'll take some pictures of a few boards so you can choose what you like the best. Uronoro...Thanks for your concern. Did you get the tenor from ebay? |

Unresolvable technical problems with ebay and paypal seem to have left me without it . Shadowyi has kindly agreed to help me out, but it's very up in the air depending on what the seller does.It was a very lovely tenor made of honduras rosewood. The seller said she drove over and bought at your physical shop, not online. Lucky lady.

Excellent eyesight, good eye/hand coordination, determination, pitch discrimination, playing technique, spatial thinking, By golly, I'm almost there! (I've never used that phrase before....) I'm not bad with "eye-balling" amounts and such, but I wouldn't consider myself great at it. My attention to detail is extensive, as you might be able to tell from my ocarina reviews. Now all I need to do is learn how to work with wood! I have been planning a future career for digital 3-D modeling, but I've been curious about the ocarina business ever since I bought my first one. Curious is an understatement, really. Mr. Hind, you live in South Carolina, right? Would you happen to offer any public wood-working workshops? You're not too far from where I live. Not too far at all, actually. Just imagine, an apprenticeship with Mr. Hind! (Okay, I'll stop being creepy and get back to the real world now. )

No, I don't plan to offer any workshops...but who knows, that might change someday. Uronoro...I remember a lady who drove down to pick one out. Everyone else...I'm grateful for all the working people who buy my instruments, but I'm just as grateful for all of you who are still in school and want them. It's what gives me hope for the future. Eventually all you guys and girls will get good jobs and be able to afford the toys you want...and I'm sure the ocarina will still be close to your heart. |

The wood is beautiful and you can tell it was created by a master. Sound is bright and pure instead of earthy and reverberated. Finger holes will take me some time to get used to but I am able to play it just fine. Takes very little air if you use too much on the first chamber you will overblow. Second chamber you can use as much as you want. Sounds in tune perfectly. The sound between the chamber differences is the best I have ever heard and I have owned a Double Focalink, Triple, and own a Forte Triple. It sounds like a single ocarina with higher scale not like two chambers. The second chamber is the best sounding second chamber I have ever heard. Finger placement is a little odd and difficult I would have liked to see it angled straight more like a Focalink and Maparam instead of like a sweet-potato single with a second chamber. Well I hope that helps I'l have a full review on Youtube over the weekend probably. |

A question for Mr Hind, how did your business work before the advent of the Internet, advertising-wise and ordering-wise. I just realized that you've been making ocarinas since the 80's and I always forget about the internet being a fairly recent innovation... Also, how has the internet changed how you do business (I would imagine youtube ocarina playing has brought in some business)? I don't know, these questions just occurred to me as I thought of how long different makers have been in business. |

That's a good question. Do you remember a few posts back when I listed some of the qualities an ocarina maker needs? One of them was "able and willing to live on low income." :oD I started selling my instruments at craft shows in 1979. Sales were meager, but at the time they only needed to support my hobby. I was a full time strings teacher in public schools. After I started making ocarinas in '81, sales picked up. After all, it was easier to sell a $10 junior ocarina than a $125 recorder or $70 transverse flute. I started going to more and more shows and handed out order forms to everyone who was interested. Many of those would come back around Christmastime. I never could afford to pay for advertising; many years my income was downright pitiful. When people at shows would ask me if I make a living at this, I would say "I make half a living...my wife makes the other half." After a while gallery owners began to approach me, and I started doing some wholesale business, but I continued to do 20-25 shows a year. I traveled as far as Coconut Grove to the south and Penn State Univ. to the north. It was very expensive to do the big shows, often costing more than $1000, not to mention time away from the shop. After launching my first website in 2002, the added internet sales meant that I could start cutting out some less productive wholesale business and do fewer shows. After that I only went to about 15 per year, but one of them was an 18 straight day marathon. That's the show that finally burned me out completely. I stopped doing all shows about two years ago, and decided I was going to make it off the website no matter what. I think I'm still licking my wounds from all those years of doing shows. I'm basically a solitary person. Sorry for the long answer; I'll get to the point. The only way I could sell ocarinas at all was by playing them for people. So craft shows worked. Youtube serves that same purpose for the worldwide community. The internet in general, and youtube and the forums in particular, make it possible for me to stay at home and in my shop and also sell to the entire world. It's great, and I'm thankful for every day. |

Then I imagine it must be great to be so renowned around the ocarina community for the excellent quality ocarinas you create. I think that any ocarina makers reputation is quite powerful around these parts. Your reputation is fantastic because of the high quality of your ocarinas and the excellent customer service. That goes a long way towards selling more ocarinas I would think. Edited by Mikael, Jun 6 2009, 03:21 PM.

I am looking forward to seeing the Double in a video sirhalos (and anyone else who has purchased one and will make a video)! ![]() I think it will do wonders in raising awareness for your new double! <update: nevermind, found the video ![]() People interested in ocarina really do run into your videos. When I was completely new to the ocarina scene, your videos were a great influence. Your demonstration of the Soprano F ocarina (If only I had a brain) is still one of my favourites! I'm really looking forward to purchases of Hind ocarinas in the future! After my audition(which I'm sure everyone is sick of hearing about by now) on my Viola in several months (If my memory serving me correctly, Mr.Hind also plays the Viola) I'll probably order an ocarina or two promptly! It's been close to a year since my last order! But I can't afford to lose any more practice time to ocarina since I am so new to the Viola(about 4 1/2 months now )! I will probably start with a Harmony Inline, I would LOVE to own a Sweet Potato, and a double as well, but the Harmony will bring something totally new to my ocarina world! Thanks flip and legal. I'm also working on a two octave double pendant, but it's at least months away. I'm fascinated by the 'chamber within a chamber' concept, and my hat's off to the guy who dreamed up this idea. At first look it seems impossible to make in wood...so many problems to solve; but I'm gradually working it out...I think. |
