Although Ms Rowell no longer makes these, I though they were worth mentioning. Huacas are multi-chambered vessel flutes that resemble ssed pods. ![]() Another artist now makes these. LINK huaca sound samples: Spoiler: click to toggle Spoiler: click to toggle |

That Alan Tower certainly has mastered circular breathing! What a great song that highlights the possibilities of a multi-chamber ocarina. I had looked through Sharon Rowell's site a few months ago and was really impressed with all of her instruments. Some of them make really crazy sounds. |

Where did you find this out? Did it say why? I am trying to make a double ocarina similar in idea to her huacas, and I wish I knew how far apart she normally "de-tunes" the two melody chambers... Deb |

Several years ago I contacted her, wanting to know if she still made huacas, and if I would be able to order one. She informed me she no longer made them. It was due to a health issue. "Experimental Musical Instruments" (published from 1985-1999) had an issue with an article written by Ms. Rowell, with instructions on how she makes one of these instruments. (with hand-drawn illustrations) They are no longer being printed, but are available on CD-ROM. http://windworld.com/products-page/books--cds/experimental-musical-instruments-complete-back-issues-on-cd-rom/ |

Wow - that's really too bad. I hate it when it's something like that - it has to be discouraging to her, too, I imagine. She seems like such a wonderful woman, sharing her gift with so many people... I'll have to look into that CD. Deb |

I didn't scroll down far enough in the catelog - the printed version is available. You'll have to contact them in order to find which volume has the article by Sharon Rowell. http://windworld.com/products-page/back-issues/experimental-musical-instruments-back-issues-volumes-in-print/ Edited by speckles, Nov 16 2009, 09:18 AM.

I just got a Sharon Rowell Huaca a couple of hours ago. I found it on Craigslist by accident. Mine is a two-chamber, not three, so it doesn't have a drone chamber, but that's ok. It sounds INCREDIBLE. It's amazing, three dimensional, stereophonic, echoing, etc. Reminds me of the echo harp double reed harmonicas. This one is from around 1985. Has the original fingering chart, I think hand drawn by Sharon Rowell. I'll post a photo of the huaca and chart soon. Sound samples may take a while, I want to learn the fingering first! Besides, no microphone could do it justice, it's just mesmerizing sounding. |

That's really cool! Can't wait to see the pics - and to have the original hand-drawn fingerings is really neat, too I need to start hanging out at Craigslist more often. I found out some local (well, sort of local) potters sold TWO kilns for $200 together. I'm not sure where I would have put them, and I don't have the cash right now, but the offer might have been too good to pass up had I seen it! Deb |
