May I ask if disabling our response to the welcome thread is an effort to prevent spamming and gaining those coveted pips?

May I ask if disabling our response to the welcome thread is an effort to prevent spamming and gaining those coveted pips?

We felt that the introduction thread was becoming a place where you could post silly posts for easy post count. It was talked over by the mod/admin squad and we decided to only allow introductions there.

We have been discussing the problem of spam alot over the last days and so are making some changes to prevent the forum turning into a heap of silly threads.

Of course we want to have a forum with a relaxed attitude but we felt it was getting a bit out of hand. After all, a forum is better when it is organized.

Bummer I was looking forward to the day, when I was a senior player and felt confident enough to welcome the newer members to the forum. oh well

I actually think posting in off-topic should count, but not in the welcoming section. The welcoming section was an easy way to boost post count from just welcoming every new member. However, off-topic has very valid posts in it. It's not just spam like games.

Also, I'm more likely to post there than any other place so I want to keep getting posts for that section.

I'm afraid that it's not possible to disable post count in the welcome section. All new members must post in the introduction thread to get 1 post count before they can see the rest of the forum. Without getting that 1 post count they won't get access to the rest. This is done to prevent spambots.

I'm not really sure why post count was disabled in off-topic, I guess it's because the threads there were starting to get a bit spam-like while it was still called chatter. I'll bring it up with the other mods and admins and see if it's reasonable to get the post count back on in off-topic.

This update changed the rules in the Welcome section to '1 post for new members only', so that issue has been solved.

Oh, so now posting in off topic doesn't count towards the total post?

That is just being so anal and whoever made that decision FAILS.

Not that I come to this forum just to post there, but I have lost interest in coming to this forum for a community thing. I don't know. I don't like it at all.

What's wrong with getting post count through off topic forum?

I think our forum is getting too uptight and, I repeat again, anal.

---

EDIT:

I have enabled the posting in Off-Topic to count into the cumulative post count of members again. However, that doesn't mean that people are free to spam in there.

Whoever SPAMS in the Off-Topic forum will be severely reprimanded..

I do think our forum needs to be more relaxed. But, again, this does not mean that everyone can spam at anywhere. So, don't spam!

As regards to TON becoming too strict... I think not, at least not yet. The post count disabled for off topic was a bit.. nonsensical. At least silly ole me didn't quite get the meaning behind that, and that does make people lose interest in coming together as a community. I agree with veggie's decision to re-enable post count; mods will have to work a slight bit harder to make sure spam doesn't happen. :)

There was a bit too much Pip Frenzy at first, but it seems to have died down.

Exactly.

Steve you have to understand that there really was a lot of spam going on especially in the off-topic forum.

We wanted to activate the post count anyway after that Pip Frenzy has died down.
This decision is definitely not nonsensical, it was an important decision to let that spam die down.

Don't be mad, there really is no reason to start getting angry about this. =(

Haha gotcha, I think people were concerned because it felt like disabling post count in off topic would have been a permanent thing.

Aye, most my posts seem to be in the Off Topic at the moment ^^; lol

I think a lot of the spam has stopped, I haven't seen the main perpetrator post in a while so *shrug*

Well, doing that might seem to be the right thing to do. But as Shadow has said, it is nonsensical.

I believe the moderators and admins are here so that we can moderate the posts. If people are spamming too much, two things we can do is to moderate the post (via deleting or editing) and to warn the spammers.

We have to remember again, we are a community forum, not a school.

We have to remember again, we are a community forum, not a school.

This is quite right but my experience as an admin at other forums showed to me that you have to let the users know what is allowed and what isn't.
And sometimes, if things get out of hand, you have to act like a school.

But that's not the point.
It's activated now, it's alright.

But you have to admit that this decision was indeed successful.
The overall spamming died down since then. You can't deny that.

Hey guys calm down! xD

I know that this is pretty unpleasant at the moment but we're only humans too.
You can be sure that we'll customize this A.S.A.P.

It's not like we only push a button and BOOM, we have a new look.
Just give us some time okay? =D

Chill! Deep breaths.
No pressure.
How ever may I ask a *teensy* wee question?
Will 'my assistant' be back? Having to go back to the forum title page over and over to click on 'todays posts' is a pain in the bum :P

Just asking!! :)

It was a link at the top of the page- when you clicked it a tiny window appeared on your desktop with 'Replies to topics you started', 'Today's active topics', 'Today's Top 10 Posters' and 'Overall Top 10 posters'.

It was super handy, you didn't need to go back and forth to update the current topics page, just click on the Assistant.

I'm not sure if that feature still exists, but those links of Top 10 and Today's Active are still here. They're at the bottom in very tiny print.
