I would
love to draw manga some day. Unfortunately, I'm no good at writing, but I figure there must be some manga writers out there who want artists...XD Here are a few examples of my best recent work (just the links cuz I don't wanna stretch the page): http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v614/aknw/CalixSketch.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v614/aknw/Iceea.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v614/aknw/Adoptables4.png That last one is chibi-style. And yes, the chibi in the bottom corner of that picture is meant to be Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy. XD If you want to see any more artses, just let me know and I'll post some more for you. Based on these pictures and the fact that I only started drawing humans about 4 years ago, and the fact that I have at least 4 or 5 more years to practice before I'd be out of college and looking for a job, do you think I'd be able to get a job illustrating manga? I've been considering it as a possible career lately, and I know I would probably end up being over-worked and under-paid, and that it would be hard to get into the industry, but it's what I really want to do. Please don't hesitate to be brutally honest and don't hesitate to critique my work, I'll take all the critique I can get! :P |

You do have talent, but I don't know if manga is the best style to define it. Keep it up! |

I agree that you definitely have talent, but it's a brutal industry. Perhaps as a side job..? A hobby? Make sure you can feed yourself! |

Not to put a damper, but shadow is right, it IS a brutal industry. It not only takes a great amount of talent, but a lot of luck too. Keep working, but I'd keep it strictly as a hobby. Those are good drawings though!

You can draw, and pretty well after only four years! Though I dont think Manga is your thing....although your drawings are good, it doesn't fit with your drawing 'feel'...too many people these days are restricting their ability to progress by confining themselves to something, such as manga or comics, for example, instead of going against the grain, doing something different and finding their OWN style
I sent artwork to top comic artist called Richard Elson when I was about 15 (12 years ago now eep) and he sent me back a lovely letter telling me the exact same thing- dont draw what everyone else is drawing, let you own hand decide for itself He also sent me a signed drawing! I still treasure it
Keep at it...draw and doodle every single day, every chance you get, and you'll see your drawing evolve a huge amount. Even if you get in trouble in school for having doodles all over your books- ignore it! I did, so did all the artists I know. Simon Bisley (of 2000AD) is a good friend of mine, (he often comes over to Belfast) and one of the top comic artists in the WORLD. He carries a sketchbook everywhere he goes, and even while we're sitting having a drink together in the house, he'll be drawing in it. He says to NEVER stop drawing!! Also, although it sounds cheesy, enrol in a life studies class (drawing models)- you'll develop twice as fast. I've been drawing for over 20 years, and have been doing weekly lifestudies for the last two years- even I noticed a massive jump in my drawing style, speed and ability. You definitley have a talent, but let it develop naturally!! Hope this helps Saz x |

Thanks so much guys! This really helps, I really appreciate you being honest.
I would have already enrolled in a figure drawing class, but I'm only 17 and I have to take some prerequisites before the community college will let me take anything like that. x.x So for now I'm stuck drawing from magazines and anatomy books. I love the idea to break away and not do either "western comics" or "manga", because I know developing my own style would be much more unique and it'd probably feel more natural, but I'm a little worried that if I did break away, no one would read my stuff... I'd like to have a style that was a marrige of the good features of any comics (I
love the emotion/expressions in manga, and the anatomy/action of western comics)...
I wonder if I could get away with a style that was only pencils and no ink? I've seen a few comic books where just pencils were used, and I realllllly like it... B) |

Try looking for a little comic called' paper biscuit'- it was done by one of the batman animators (name escapes me) and in a wonderful loose drawing fashion-the artwork is exquisite! Here's a sample:

I agree I say go for it all out! And My friend's Dad(who is a professional cartoonist) has told me and some of my friends that the best wast to hone your skills and become more original is to twist pictures around. For example take a picture of Mickey Mouse and make him look like a homocidal maniac, turn anime characters into cartoony characters and vice versa, but make sure you keep the same basic elecments of the character |

Paper Biscuit is by Ronnie del Carmen! xD And yeah I have to agree. Keep doodling, you'll find your own style and flow soon! And honestly: Being like everyone else is boring isn't it? You got talent though, keep it up! =D |

Thanks again, you guys are amazing! <3 I shall definitly shoot for having my own unique style (hopefully with just pencils, they feel much more natural to me than pens or ink). It will probably have some strong manga influences (I read too much manga to avoid that, lol) but I'll try to let it flow towards whatever is most comfortable/natural for me.

DeepRed is right, take some traditional classes (life drawing is a MUST) and do not do what everyone is is doing. What you're doing right now is copying the Manga "style," but could you draw a straightforward portrait of someone (your mom, your best friend) and make it look like them? You should be able to do that, before you think about getting into Manga or any other kind of illustration of that sort. I've seen too many young artists start out with learning the manga style, only to discover (as they take more traditional art classes—as they will be required to do if they seek any sort of formal education) that they must "unlearn" all that Manga stuff first, and it makes it doubly hard. If you learn traditional drawing, and then learn how to adapt it, exaggerate it, create your own style from it, that'll be the way to go. |
