Thanks for posting that Spencer. I really enjoyed reading about you and your business. I'm really glad that you're posting more on TON as it's always great to have the makers take part in discussion and answer questions. It was a real joy when Charlie Hind was active for a little while on TON. :] Take it easy.

Thanks for that sample, thats the first unaltered (so it sounds) sample thats of a decent quality. :)

I do have one question that bothers me though, is this a "normal" rising breath Ocarina, or does this not increase, or have an unusually small breath requirement.
From previous posts it sounds like its a Type A. (Same BP)

It's type 1/A - constant breath pressure. I hear the breath required is really low too, so... I guess it's like an extreme example of a type one, too!

Is there any way to buy spencer's ocarinas normally? I mean, not bidding on eBay but an onlineshop or something :)

because i don't want to get angry like when you think you bought the item and you click refresh and in the last second someone was willing to pay more than you :( i hate it ;)

I think they are worth the $300... That's around the price of an Ogawa, and they're very similar ocarinas to me.
Like you said with getting upset by auctions, the other side of that is that the people who get them at $160 are happier than if they bought from a store.

An humble ocarina-player.
I think that the auctions thing is not intended to be permanent. All he's selling are just the AC's, and we know he has several other models.

Didn't he say that he was selling on Bay to get an idea of how to price them for his store? Or maybe it was Panch that said that....

Just bought a Spencer Ocarina from Spencer on eBay for $204.37. I think it may be a little expensive but it was my only choice and I desperately wanted a Spencer ocarina. Get it to me soon, Spencer, I'm excited to play!

Damn, you! I was going to bid on that one... I wish I'd paid that little bit extra now! I hope you enjoy it! ... Or as my mother would say "choke on it". :paranoid:

I really want to win the next auction. I hope it's green next time. Fingers crossed, fingers crossed. :eager:

You're in luck, new one just came up on eBay and it's green just like the one I bought.

It's just my opinion, I know. I also don't care for all those "secret recipes" out there...I'm probably a little bit of an idealist-communist at heart.
You're just a bit lawful/good at heart, and that's never a bad thing... Unless you're in a party of chaotic/evil drows. :paranoid:
rofl yeeesssss WOOT for the D&D reference!! :music:

I wish i could afford a spencer ocarina...im still kicking myself for not bidding on one 4 years ago when i started playing...my parents insisted that i "could get one some other time"...now 9 ocarina's later, im still waiting lol. it was a sad day when they just vanished for a while...now they're going for even crazier prices.

Received my new Spencer ocarina today, one of the ones he has at 'Buy It Now' price on ebay - i tell ya, the ocarina is worth every penny he charges for them, i'm in awe over how wonderfully it plays. I understand now what all the hype is about concerning his ocarinas, they truly are very well crafted with a lot of care going into its sound quality, playability and aesthetic design. The presentation box is really nice as well, adds a touch of professionalism that lives up to the quality of the ocarina.

I'm also especially happy because Spencer wrote a little note to me saying thanks for the purchase and also complimenting my art - i consider that an honour that he would even look at my work, let alone comment about it. He's truly made my day, i'm so so happy C: Yay for Spencer!

Our economy isn't doing so good either, in Britain. A $100 ocarina would have cost £50 or under before the recession. Now it costs at least £66, and sometimes quite a lot more.

I really must try a new Spencer. I'm beginning to think that my Spencer is of a significantly lower quality, if only with a few years of poor treatment and wear.

Hmm, it would be interesting to compare your older model with the one i have, i couldn't really say for sure at the moment whether yours is lower in quality or not. But the way you've described whats happened to the finish on yours, it would put me off playing it too. My green one is really lovely to hold and play, the mouthpiece is also very comfortable. The sound is very controlled, and requires very little effort on the player's part to get it to sound good. There is absolutely no blowing your brains out for the high notes either (like those old STL Zelda Tenors we both own) because with the Spencer you only need to blow softly for the whole range. This green one is a pleasure to play all round, the best word i can give to describe it is 'gentle' - nice to hold, plays wonderfully and sounds gorgeous :)

I know what I mean, but still, I'm in kinda a disavantage >.< If you disconsider the comparisions between currencies and consider them only as "money" (because you gain £1 the same way I gain R$1), I pay 200 "moneys" for an ocarina, while you pay 66 >.<

this is just a guess, don't know if it would really work that way, but that's how I see it

@Jade, Please, do wirte us a review of this ocarina!

... No... Maybe the conversion's wrong, but $R200 definitely isn't equal to £66.
Anyway, it's not so bad as Brazil, but while America is fine now, Britian is still paying a good 50% more for most imported goods than before the recession.

I really want to try a new Spencer. It might just be because my Spencer is too gross for me to play, and I don't like touching the mouthpiece with my lips (it's the worst part of the ocarina, and it's all scabby and awful), and I haven't had a proper go with it yet, but still, unless I completely strip off it's current finish and refinish it, it's in some way, unplayable.

I will do a review, but it is taking a little time getting used to it, with the really low breath pressure it requires and all, i'm trying to adjust to that at the moment. Plus my latest sculpture is demanding all my time recently, but rest assured i'll make a review of this wonderful ocarina eventually :D

Indeed good sir.
I've had some trouble with taking pictures with my phone (it keeps deleting them), but I'll take a few when I get around to mooching a proper camera.
You can see it, but it's not the same as when your lips are touching it, and you're being knocked out by the strongest 'mouthwash' smell you've ever... Smelt. :? Anyway, I'll put up pictures, but they won't quite do it justice. I think Kalin can vouch for it's awfulness, though!

Crowler has some photo of his Spencer in his blog Shirf, no close-ups of the mouthpiece, but the overall surface does look very grotty...
