The ocarina has inspired me to look at more instruments!

And the first thing that I would love to be able to play is the Keyboard.

I have my eye on the Yamaha EZ200 which has a built in learning system with light up keys.
Spoiler: click to toggle

So for anything about the keyboard, post away in this topic :)

I've got a Yamaha keyboard, but it's a cheap one that doesn't light up.
I never really learned to play the piano, but I do play around with the keyboard sometimes. It can help when trying to choose chords for a song or coming up with a melody.

I've got this one: PSR-170

I remember that Medeli brand keyboards usually have "Ocarina" in the instruments list

Casio don't have "Ocarina" as such, but there's one called "Bottle blow" which sounds like ocarina :D

I taught myself to play piano and keyboard when I was about 12...it was good fun and I did manage to learn a lot, but there's only so far you can go without an instructor. The light up keys sound like a great idea! I wonder what level of skill they can take you up to....?

Yeah, it's amazing how much "life" can slow you down when you are trying to learn an instrument. Oh, and my Casio is a PX-120.

CHARLESTON, CHARLESTON...

I've got a Casio CTK-150. I don't even dare guess how old it is. It sounds really bad, and it's not even MIDI compatible!

My family also has a really old upright piano. It used to be a player piano! The thing could be over 100 years old, for all we know. It hasn't been tuned for ages, giving it a unique (and perhaps bad) sound. It's kind of annoying, though, because some of the keys tend to stick.

I really wish I could play it better, though. I can't get my hands to work independently.

Maybe you could get a piano tuner to come round to your house and give your old piano an good tuneup and 'road-service'! :) It's a little expensive but well worth it! :) Your 'Old Faithful' might sound amazing after a little T.L.C. :D Yeah, moving onto using two hands on the piano/keyboard is a difficult stage, but once you get over the hump you'll wonder how you ever did without chords! :D

Keyboards sound too unnatural. Just get a regular piano

I've got a Yamaha EZ-205i. The lights are for playing in the dark or with your eyes closed (a very good learning technique). Usually they're just distracting.

IceWind, have a tuner or a piano restorer look at it. Some repairs cost more than a new keyboard.

I have a toy piano which is really fun too play. I also have a harmonium which is an indian hand pump organ. That's a lot of fun too.

I'd suggest getting an electric keyboard first to see if you like it. Make sure you get one with full-size keys though, some of the smaller cheaper one have tinier keys which are harder to play and will make the transition to a real piano feel more awkward. Also, if you can find one that has weighted keys that will feel more natural, but they tend to be more expensive.

Hey, anybody working with MIDI? I have a Yamaha CVP-7, from 1985 that is an absolutely amazing MIDI controller. I am running it into my laptop via a USB/MIDI cable and using Reason 4.0 with the piano refill. Love the Stienways, David Darlington's producer piano sounds amazing! The Strings Refill left a lot to be desired though.

I still need a midi cable, but I want to use my keyboard for making midis. I already sequence midis from scratch, but being able to play what you hear in your head is a lot easier than trying to guess the notation.

If you have USB 2.0 get the midi to USB cable. I thought I would have to get a converter box, but the cable is $40 at guitar center. I was amazed when I plugged in via USB, works great. Next I want to get the Alesis Multimix USB 2.0 mixer. I am sold on this new USB gear, works better than firewire as far as I can tell. Downloading the Miroslav Orchestra refill so I can have a good string section, they have a choir refill also. Midi is the way to go, you can even get midi wind controllers! Like ocarina for computer, been looking around at whats what for the wind controllers, looks like a lot of fun. Imagine, an ocarina that sounds like an orchestra, or a whole wind section.
