I emailed Mr. Hind about the Zelda pendant in Corian and this is what he said, in case someone else is interested

Hi Luis,

I don't have any of those made right now. I was planning to only continue that size in wood, but I have had many requests for the corian. The price will be $199, and I'll keep your name on a list to be notified if I make more.

Thanks,

Charlie Hind

Price seems steep but a handmade ocarina out of a solid block of rock carved by an expert craftsman who's legacy might end with him is priceless!!

Just an FYI, as of two days ago Mr. Hind has about 6-8 weeks lag time if you're going to be ordering a custom sweet potato. Guess a lot of people really want one right now!

I've finally found out what my next oc will be, and that's a Hind! :D
I contacted mr. Hind and got a response extremely fast.. (That's service! :D )
WE figured out that a Mahogany and Padauk ocarina would fit me best..
Here is an example except that it's cocobolo instead of Mahogany:

I'm strongly considering getting a Hind like now. It's been a dream oc for a while, but I don't know what type of wood to get. How do the different woods affect the sound of the ocarina? I might just email Mr. Hind and ask him.

Mr. Hind answers really quickly and the mail you get back are what you may call Perfect! Inside the mail you get back you have everything you need to know after a question is asked! :D
I asked him what ocarina would fit me the most!
I also said that I wanted the most mellow and warm sounding ocarina I could get!

And his mail back was this:

Mail from Mr. Hind

Hi Torstein,

Some of the most mellow, warmest sounding tenor sweet potatoes I've made have been from Mahogany. It's not as extremely hard as the rosewoods, and that probably contributes to it's exceptional tone quality on the lower instruments. I've attached two pictures showing the last Mahogany I made. The price list is also attached in case you want to consider other woods. Padauk is another good one.

I hope this is helpful, and let me know if you have any more questions.

Kind regards,

Charlie Hind

That mail was sent to me 10 minutes after I sent my mail to him!
That's good service! :D

Mr. Hind uses all hardwood so any ocarina he makes will sound excellent. It's a matter of preference, I feel. I love Honduras Rosewood for the pattern and the rosewood smell. Others have said cocobolo is one of the best woods for woodwinds, and so on and so forth.

Angelofdeath -- I hate thinking that his legacy might end with him. SIGH.

>.=.< I really Really REALLY want my hands on his double ocarina now! I've been waitin for over two weeks already for my order to come in haha! I'm sure he's a busy man, but he promised that he'd mail it by the end of last week(March 28) and said that an email would be sent notifying me of it's journey to my doorstep, but there's been no sign of it /anywhere/ in my email! My account on his website has no sig of it being sent either. D: Oh the joys of anticipating something that you truly enjoy. I LOVE ocarinas and the music I can make with them! When I get my hands on his ocarina I'll be sure to make a fair amount of vids with it. After all, I've seen very few owners post vids showcasing it. ;) Come on Mr. Hind! I'll do my best to help ya increase your sales!

:D Yeah, Harmony is whole new dimension of ocarina playing. If you play a single afterwards, it sounds really... lonely... the sound reminds me of a twin, who lost its brother...
But luckily that feeling doesn't last long... :)
Ocarinas sound always so soothing :)
I just had guests and played on some of my ocarinas, until they lost interest in my play. Then I picked up my harmony and they were all really surprised, how different and beautiful that sound is. :D

I love the sound of my Hind walnut, but after playing so many ocs that need lots of air, I've been having trouble over-blowing my Hind. Poor thing screams at me until I tone the breath down.

Uronoro! If you read this, get a Hind walnut for playing in the house. It's a nice, fairly quiet oc.

I would only consider buying a Hind sweet potato is Hind did custom fingerings, i.e. WPN style subholes.

I would like to get a few Hind inlines though, just to "complete" my collection. (for now)

Well Charlie said he would answer our questions which is wonderful of him so I'll start it off.

Thank you Charlie for joining our Ocarina forums here! We members here have a very high degree of respect of the art and craft you put in your instruments and quality in sound. If you don’t mind I would like to ask some questions about your design process.

-Subholes
Sweet Potato Ocarinas usually come in two different subhole fingerings the Japanese way (right hand index and middle finger) and the Taiwanese way (left hand middle finger and right hand middle finger). Your sweet potatoes however follow a unique placement for subholes.

How did end up deciding on where you were going to place the subholes on your Ocarinas? What advantages do you find with your placement of the subholes over the Japanese and Taiwanese styles? Are these advantages unique to wood sweet potatoes only?

-Wood selection
You offer a big verity of beautiful woods for your Ocarinas where do you purchase your wood from? Do you have different vendors? Do you go out and select the wood pieces by hand? Do you buy them in bulk? What locations in the world do your woods come from?

-History
What came first for you working with wood or playing music? Did enjoy wood and created wooden instruments only to learn and enjoy them? Or did you play instruments then try to make them out of wood and enjoyed them?

Thanks for your time Mr Hind and enjoy your stay at The Ocarina Network!

Instrument Maker

Hi sirhalos,

Thank you for your kind words about my instruments. I'll by happy to answer your questions.

-Subholes
My sweet potato ocarinas have only one subhole, and it is in the same place as the instruments you mentioned. In the beginning I made a few sweet potatoes with two subholes, but on two out of five instruments, the top note didn't have as pure a tone as I wanted. It takes so long to make one instrument that I couldn't take any more time experimenting with voicing. I decided that for me it was better to have a perfect top note and forego the low A. There are probably plenty of people who would be happy with the tone of the top note I was getting, but I wasn't. I knew that by limiting the range I would be limiting my market, but my first goal has always been to make an instrument I enjoy playing. The subhole next to the right middle finger lowers the tonic note (C) down 1/2 step to B. The double hole next to the right little finger is only used for playing C# (F# on the tenor and soprano). It works like the low double holes on recorder. I like having quick and easy access to this note when playing in d minor. It is a real advantage.

-Wood selection
I like picking out boards myself, by hand. I have to be very careful to find any cracks and other flaws that I wouldn't want in the finished instrument. Unfortunately there aren't that many dealers in exotic woods in my area. I recently rode my scooter up to Greenville and bought some cocobolo and yellowheart at Woodcraft. Read about that trip in the "New Members" section (post #355). Tomorrow I'll be driving down to Columbia to buy some Grenadilla for a tenor. Of course I can't always afford to drive to buy wood. Sometimes I have the dealer ship it to me. It's hard to afford to buy exotic woods in "bulk" because it's so expensive. The biggest order I've made was on a small pallet about 4 feet square and stacked about 18 inches high. That small pile cost over $1000. Last year I spent over $4000 on wood. The woods I use come from the US, Central America, South America, and Africa.

-History
I had never made anything out of wood before I started making recorders in 1975. I wanted a nice wooden recorder and couldn't afford to buy one. At the time I was a music major in college. I took a night course at a local tech school to learn how to run a lathe. So from the beginning I made instruments to suit myself. I progressed from recorders to transverse flutes, xylophones, and finally ocarinas in 1981.

Where Have You Sinners Gone?

The amount of effort you must go through just to make one ocarina must be incredible. I'm starting to value them and your hard work even more now, if that was possible.

I hope the profit you make off your ocarinas is helping you to live comfortably while providing for your continuing business. I'm starting to think you're selling them too cheap. :C Do you accept tips?

I've really liked the tone of the Hind Ocarinas I've heard. Then there's the whole beautiful look thing which matches the sound, and you have this all around astonishingly amazingly beautiful instrument, and now I think I may have to save up to get one eventually. Though I still need to think about what wood I would want...

After hearing Kissing's self-duet with his ukelele and hind ocarina, I ordered the same kind of hind ocarina. I really loved the sound and the design. Okay, so I don't play as good as him yet, but who cares. It's in Bflat, so it will be different from my other ocarina in C. I also love wooden instruments, and for like $58 total with shipping, it's a steal. Maybe in the future I'll put a video or two up on youtube

I've done my recording of my 100th video on my Hind Sweet Potato soprano, I have also ordered a Tenor Sweet Potato as well.

I'm just waiting to see if anyone is going to send me a video of them playing the song before uploading it...

Anyway all the best,

Dave

You mean to extend the range? He already makes a harmony double.
Everyone here seems to be interested in a wooden multi-chambered ocarina that extends range...I would love one, too. :double: :triple: :jumpy:

I was eyeing the Focalink doubles until I saw and heard the hinds...now I need to pick some woods...I love purpleheart and walnut, so maybe those two layered?
I'm just wondering if they would make a good-sounding ocarina, or even if it would look nice...
Decisions, decisions... -_-

No, its not about extending the range.

I just don't like inlines.

Tried to play a friends Mountain G and it just seemed too weird. I like sweet potatoes too much.

:D Thank you for your trust in the quality of my ocarinas. Alas, I am pretty busy these days and cannot invest time in our beloved hobby of ocarina making (and I think it will have to stay a hobby, never growing to a business). Hopefully this gets better during summer. We will see... As I still haven't made my personal perfect ocarina, there 'might' (only maybe!) some ocarinas for sale on my way to that goal someday. But for now, I cannot accept any orders, sorry for that. :)

And I'd love to own a hind harmony one day... :) *dream*
My selfmade wooden harmony just looks ugly  and I forgot to make split holes, so I have to halfcover holes for sharps, but on the other hand, its sound is really good enough to prevent me investing money in yet another ocarina :D (oh we are all so addicted)

Man, when did Mr. Hind start making the doubles that extended the range on the ocs? I must be out of touch, considering I haven't been around much in the last year...

The one on his front page looks impressive!! If you haven't seen it, take a look!

Here is the one he was selling, but is already sold...:(

not so much about being smart. If you mean cheaper though Mountain ocarinas would probably be best and they have no wait time. but a wooden ocarinas are known to have their original sound. all based on personal choice which is better.
